Trudy could have told her parents these truths. The factor that when the real Nick came into the restaurant & said that he can't make it to the family gathering & after their breakup, I am sure her parents would have understood. That she was late for the interview her father set up, & that Nick walked out on her in the diner where she was waitressing. She was over 21 & could have told them, that "I don't have a boyfriend yet & Nick & I didn't work out, & I have to come alone". After all her brother & sister came alone too. That was better than kidnapping and taking an innocent man hostage who had another girlfriend who was meeting him at the diner that he was engaged to, so why didn't she just tell her parents the truth?
