I havent seen the anime so I know most people that hate this are fans of the show but my question is dose this work as a film on its own

It doesn't. There's a lot of things that aren't properly built up to, a lot of scenes that seem to come out of nowhere and a lot of plain stupid situations (the most commonly mentioned one is the prison for earthbenders with plenty of earth). I'd highly recommend the show, though.

If you haven't seen the show its a halfway decent fantasy adventure film. Don't listen to the fanboys who try to use the source material against it.
