How was Mary not MORBIDLY obese?

We see that Mary was slightly overweight, but honestly, with her lifestyle, I'd imagine she'd be much heavier, even more than Precious.

- She probably eats just as much, if not even more than Precious and she demands her to cook food for her that looks very oily and unhealthy.

- Precious even tells the social worker that her mom is a like a whale b/c she eats, watches tv, and sleeps.

- she's unemployed, rarely leaves the house, probably doesn't exercise, most sits on the couch and watches tv.

- Her stress level is probably very high since her self esteem is so low. Plus she also holds and grudge against Precious for "stealing her man". All that unhappiness can lead to weight gain and using food as a coping mechanism.

I was under the impression she was morbidly obese bc of the food and the calorie content??

You weren't watching carefully. She pretended often not to like the meal or that it was cold so Precious would be the one forced to eat it. Mary overate but she made sure her daughter was fatter than her. Mary was a depressed person, depressed people can go through cycles of overeating and then not eating and lying around apathetically.
