There was a girl that lived in Precious building that always wanted to talk to her, wanted to see her baby, she was all friendly and all that she got was big Precious pushing her down to the floor. Only when Precious sees that the girl is being abused just like her then she is nice and gives her the orange scarf
shareI got the feeling that Precious was taking out her anger on the little girl. Yet, the little girl did seem annoying. And I believe Precious gave her a red scarf, red meaning the color and symbol for HIV/AIDS.
shareThe little girl wasn't real. She was another figment of Precious' imagination, and was Precious herself as a child. You can tell from the final scene where she's sitting down with the younger version of Mary (Precious' mother), and she suddenly disappears when Precious looks in her direction.
Also, I think the scarf is the same one given to her during the daydream sequence at the beginning of the film (given by the younger version of her grandmother maybe?). Most of all, giving the scarf was an act of love and kindness to herself. After hating herself for most of the film (being verbally and physically abusive to the little girl) she has learnt to accept and love herself.
Shya83, at one point at thought you could be right, it could be precious when she was younger. But then if you look at the little's girl mum sitting next to her is a different actress, if it was really precious mum they would have just put Monique instead and make her up to make her look younger. So I guess the little girl was real.

The little girl is real... when we see her with her own mum at the end, we realise that Precious' suffering is shared with many girls around her.
