I'm not black either and I don't have kids--but I related to this movie also.
I grew up with multiple disabilities and was in special ed classes for my well below grade level math skills
my dad never molested me but both parents verbally/emotionally raged @ me bc of my multiple medical conditions--and it only continued until I moved out. They had mocked the way the medications made me look...and bc their insurance was paying for it, I was supposed to take it.
Yes I was physically alive but if your parents can attack you just for existing what kind of life is that?
I had a higher reading/writing level than precious, but finding people who were safe was still very hard. I felt closeted even though I am heterosexual. Talking with most people was incredibly painful.
One guy spit in my face when he found out I had epilepsy and we were dating. I never saw him again.
