Abuse happens in all socio-economic brackets, not just the lower class or working poor. Some of the most horrific cases have been documented in middle and upper classes. Yes, she probably was keeping Precious to earn an extra welfare benefit, but that's not 'abuse' any more than a rich woman unwillingly bearing an heir for her husband - neither woman wanted the child, they just benefited from the birth of one. Abuse is the neglect of needs, physical and sexual harm, and emotional torture. I've met parents across every income level and met extraordinary loving people regardless of how many coins were in their pockets; unfortunately, I've met some very cold, strict (and in some cases abusive) parents in each category as well. Even though this movie was set in the lower income bracket, can we please be respectful of not generalizing or stereotyping all parents as abusive monsters based on their salary? Thank you.
