Why keep the humans in space
Been while since I've seen this and can't recall if explained to why the computer pilot tried to stop the humans from returning to Earth.
shareOriginally, the plan was to use the Axiom as a kind of "life preserver in space" while WALL-E type robots cleaned the Earth up enough so that life could return to it and support humans once again. At some point, the BnL Ceo sent a message to the Axiom saying that that plan failed and to stay in space(Directive A113). AUTO, being a computer, HAD to obey.
What choice do I have? It is as if you have grabbed me by the base of my snarglies!
Just finished watching and the captain sees that the same robot is standing as auto pilot for previous Captains. As if the robot took control and was making the decisions (i.e. like I Robot movie). At least in that other movie... it was more explained that the robot felt humans were not good at making decisions. But it didn't seem as if this auto pilot robot was given me same explanation.
shareYes, the "clean the earth" plan was only supposed to take 5 years so basically the CEO gave up too soon and AUTO has been in control of the ship for pretty much the entire time it's been in space.
So, basically you are right. The only difference is that AUTO was ordered to 'not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm'(Isaac Asimov's Zeroth Law of Robotics) whereas VIKI came to that conclusion herself in "I, Robot".

Thanks ... hate rewatching a movie or show and finally wanting an answer I perhaps should have asked or questioned previously.
