The Axiom is a closed microcosm that has existed for centuries. How can they be routinely shooting waste out into the void of space?
Are they somehow able to acquire raw materials and metals from some probe or something?

shareTechnically, the ship that picks up and drops off Eve indicates that probes and harvesting is possible, and whose to say that same ship isn't harvesting materials from the earth while it waits for Eve to finish searching?
Or, the Axiom is located near a large gaseous cloud. Given the advanced level of AI Eve in the centuries old Wall E model, technology should be advanced enough to make materials out of harvested nearby elements.
Well, if it is up to the audience to come up with a possible explanation instead of letting the movie show us, it means it didn't explain things good enough.
shareI think spending time to explain how everything in the world of the movie works would have detracted from the movie. People didn't hate the first Star Wars because George Lucas didn't explain how a light saber works or how faster than light travel is achieved. We just assume it works and focus on the story.
shareI don't think it can be compared to lightsabers and faster than light travels. And it could either have been shown in a way that explained it by letting people draw a common conclusion, or they could have used a similar but different concept that would have made sense.
sharedont they teach you in US/UK that movies are not "real" and that you don't have to try to explain everything and try to over analyze it? it's just a product of some creative minds who have no knowledge in science and such ( they wouldn't be writing/producing movies otherwise). it's storytelling.. I see so many comments like that of people trying to "understand" this and that and refer to reality.. When you dream do you think everything must be explained and can be? well no it's just art work, out of reality, like poetry and such.. it deals with emotions. If you think you are going to learn science or anything from entertainment products I pity you.
