The Broken Mirror
A masterpiece, I loved it. An absolutely beautiful film, amazing. I liked the music too, it reminded me of Solaris. I was a bit tired, drank half a bottle of coke and got shivery and nervous from the caffeine. I scared myself *beep* =)
(Spoilers)
The twist in the end is pretty obvious, but the real question is why she changed when she realized that she killed her real image. Her brain damage explains her memory loss before the accident, but not really a personality change. But the other doppelgänger want her to remember (which is unusual, since crash victims often don't remember a crash)
"You have conquered, and I yield.
Yet, henceforward art thou also dead - dead to the World, to Heaven, and to Hope!
In me didst thou exist - and, in my death, see by this image, which is thine own, how utterly thou hast murdered thyself."
My attempt at a metaphysical interpretation:
We have the desire to be mirrored, to look into a mirror and see someone who is beautiful, loved and perfect. We want to hide and destroy the ugly part behind the mirror. There is one shot from behind the mirror before her brother's girlfriend gets killed, which shows this hidden dark, dreadful world.
When we ignore our ugly side, we can't allow some feelings, and have to murder them. Our life becomes superficial and fragile like a mirror.
Gina can still feel and love, and be warm, until she realize that she is only 1 half of the mirror, that she murdered her duality.
Well... it's not really logical ;)
Uh and the scariest image is when her father is phoning with her and his mirror image is approaching him out of the dark.
