Thanks for this little clue! The wikipedia entry on vardøger says:
"The vardøger or vardøgr is a spirit predecessor, from Norwegian folklore. Stories typically include instances that are nearly déjà vu in substance, but in reverse, where a spirit with the subject's footsteps, voice, scent, or appearance and overall demeanor precedes them in a location or activity, resulting in witnesses believing they've seen or heard the actual person, before the person physically arrives."
This of course fits several scenes in the movie to a t.
Of course, then the wikipedia entry describes the vardøger as less sinister than the doppleganger, which isn't exactly the case, but it looks like the screenwriter was inspired by the notion of the vardøger, and maybe that's why the title has the ø in it, as a kind of reference to this.
Also, I think it's supposed to represent a whole divided into 2 parts.
