Arthur C Clarke's 'Technical Error'

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technical_Error summarizes the plot of a short story Sean Ellis must have read as a child.

Being too lazy to read all the posts, is there a plausible theory here of how partial amnesia could imbue Gina's "broken" reflection with human emotional responses? (My understanding of concussions is that they suppress memories) Having enjoyed the film immensely, I am happy to overlook a "plot hole" (if that's what it is) that makes POV-paradigm-shift twist work, but was just hoping that someone had figured it out from clues/details I missed in one late-night viewing.

There was a reference to the incidence of "situs inversus with dextrocardia" spiking in the last 25 years. Should we attach any meaning to this time-frame; I.E. is it coincident with a spike in "mirror usage" or some other factor?

Also are we to believe that Doppelgangers have great physical strength? What, specifically, did Kate's do that killed her in the shower?

Is the general consensus here that there is no "teleology" behind the creation of a Doppelganger? It is just the pure "bad luck" of who is being reflected in the mirror at the instant it breaks due to a stochastic event.

OTOH, perhaps this is in fact the [true] origin of this superstition ....
