10 reasons why this movie is awful

1. Massively overused orchestral crescendo. The music builds up as if something exciting is about to happen, then nothing happens. Again and again and again.

2. Shots linger too long on uninteresting crap. Hey, let's look a this coffee cup for the next 5 minutes while the audience falls asleep.

3. Cliche "protagonist is actually a ghost/doppleganger" twist at the end. It was original and surprising in "The Sixth Sense." It was predictible and boring in "The Broken."

4. Lack of any reasonable explanation or background information on the dopplegangers. Simple questions like what they are, where they come from, or why they are killing people are never answered. Pretentious armchair film buffs on this forum will try to say that no explanation is needed because the film is artistic and open to interpretation, but this is *beep* Being artistic is fine but sacrificing context to this degree is inexcusable.

5. Inconsistent killings. The brother's girlfriend's doppleganger was able to magically shove its hand into her mouth and make her bleed to death (???). Lena Heady's doppleganger had to attempt to suffocate her victim with a bag and finally resorted to bludgeoning her with a statuette.

6. Portrayal of doctors/therapists as idiots. Their conversations always focused on Heady's inability to remember the car crash she was involved in. She suffered a *beep* concussion, of course she doesn't remember anything.

7. Heady's character's memory loss appears only when it's convenient for the plot. She remembers her boyfriend and family, her radiology skills, her car, her brother's phone number, but not where she lives or the fact that SHE IS A *beep* DOPPLEGANGER.

8. Plot integrity is sacrificed during feeble attempts to keep the painfully obvious "twist" hidden. When Heady drops her pill bottle and bends over, her reflection makes an angry stabbing motion at her. If Heady is actually the doppleganger and not the real her, why does she have another evil reflection in the mirror?? Also, why is her doppleganger boyfriend chasing after her? Why doesn't he just kindly remind her that she is one of them?

9. Overuse of the same crappy flashback. Ok we get it, you guys spent money on a slow motion shot of a car crash with a dummy painted to look like Lena Heady. We don't need to see it every 5 minutes.

10. The enemies weren't scary enough. They didn't even go to the trouble of putting some scary makeup on the actors for their evil dopplegangers.

Seriously, even the horrendous "Mirrors" with Kiefer Sutherland was better than this garbage.

Just watched this last night and I agree with nearly everything. I think this movie falls into the trap that good cinematography can make any subject fascinating. Hence the coffee cup scene you reference.

I was actually OK though with not having a back story on the doppelgangers. I don't need everything explained to enjoy a story like this.

But at several points during the movie we would say something like, "I know I'm supposed to be scared because we have some spooky music going on", but then nothing would happen.

I think you're being a little harsh but generally correct. Boring, unexplained, and very little happens.

This is one really bad movie. Due to lack of a coherent plot it resorts to pretentious shifts in the storyline that are meant to impress but just confuse. The scary bits could be watched by a 12 year old without any worries to the effect they are having because they just are not scary. Bloody in places but most kids today have seen worse on the news. A waste of 90 minutes.

You didn't get this movie at all, don't you?
I can't even follow your logic. Enought to quote:
"They didn't even go to the trouble of putting some scary makeup"

Jeezus. THEY DID. Have you watched this movie or not? And second - WHY do you feel thats neccesary to put scary make up on anyone in this movie?

I enjoyed the lingering shots, the weirdness and nonsensical aspects of this film, its music, and particular way of evoking suspense. I agree with posters about the woeful dummy in the car-accident scenes. And it does seem like either it was arthouse not quite making up its mind towards the goal of arthouse, or conversely, mainstream horror/thriller not quite settling for mainstream. To put it another way, it was a British film, that felt a little like a Hollywood film attempting to be 'French'. Or something like that. Anyway, I really quite liked the idea despite its silliness.

This might be due to the fact that the movie is a British-French co-production. They even say so explicitly during the ending credits.

If these creatures live behind mirrors, come from other dimensions, bla bla, meaning they are not Human in Nature and, being able to jump to this reality, howcome didn t Stephen recognized the Bad Gina?? He can come God knows how from an evil dimension but doesnt spot a fellow mate?

Why did the Evil Gina suffered from an accident? isnt she supposed to be a Demon sort of thing? And these creatures also suffer from post traumatic Stress?? Like, their bodies can go across walls but get injured afterwards? they get human bodies here? how about behind the mirrors? they also have bodies there ?
Please...

And evil doppelganger Gina due to braindamage becomming a good Human???? and at the end she remembers,,"Oh, I am the evil doppelganger,,damm this brainbruises,,,how could I have forgotten I was the evil one,,shame on me,,and that stupid evil doppelganger Stephen didnt tip me,,shame on Him."

And then its like,,,"oh, I am the evil one,,,better forget all about being caing and good.natured the rest of the movie.."

Please
