Thing 2011 vs Halloween 2 (1981)?

Anyone care to discuss the pluses/minuses of these films compared to the originals? Both films I both enjoyed but will forever be doomed with the "not as good as the first film " tag?

In an age where Twilight is considered a "vampire" movie You gotta take what you can get! It gets harder and harder to find a good horror film at the multiplex, especially here in Australia, where a lot of these aren't distributed in cinemas and are dumped on DVD (even if it is a US hit).

I DO wish the producers had gone with old fashioned FX though and shown the alien pilot...

Old post but I enjoyed halloween 2 more because it literally continued the film. Carpenter was involved to an extent and I thought it was a good ending to the story. As for the thing, this is almost my favorite film of all time. So ahead of it's time. I didnt mind the prequel but one thing pissed me off that they went out of their way to screw up. They shoot this film shot for shot in some scenes to tie it to the original. From the thing Macready and doc find and bring back to the dog chased in the film. The one thing they forgot that ruins it for me is when the norg guys film all the vhs tapes of them blowing it up with thermite charges and exposing it. None of this happens in the prequel and in fact it's buried when we first see it. Just doesnt work for me.

Yep, same complaints here about this film.

Where's the scene where the Norwegian Team blew up the Ice with Thermite while filming themselves doing that? (I think when this film got made there was discussion as to whether or not Thermite COULD actually blow up that much ice?) But, my argument is, "Who cares whether it can or can't, it was in Carpenter's version!!"

So the movie's solution - Oh, by the way, the ship still works(!!!) and thats how we get the ice to melt. DUMB.

Those flaws above, coupled with some poor CGI moments are my main complaints.

Other than that, I gave it a 7/10 - mostly for nostalgic reasons.

IMDB - Because some Trolls need more than just a bridge

(Thanks for the replies - so far!)

yeah, I like how H2 gets right into the action, very underrated sequel.

Would love to see practical fx/pilot version of Thing2011

While I'M here : Howabout Thing 2011 vs Escape from LA?

I think Thing2011 is Still better than the Fog/Assault on Precinct 13 remakes.

I LIKE the Rob Zombie Halloween's . I woulda preferred a whole movie of young Mike in the asylum and one thing I liked about H2 (2009)was how the girl is gradually losing her mind NOT just suddenly going crazy like some slasher movie survivors do in the end(eg Chainsaw 2, F13 pt 4, Halloween 4 etc)

"Halloween II" was great! I loved it. And, it had a perfect ending with Michael vs. Loomis.

There's always going to be a difference when the original's creator is involved in a sequel/prequel vs. a project where that isn't the case.

Halloween II (1981) in comparison to Halloween (1978);
+ Improved kill scenes
+ Better nude scene
+ Darker, tenser atmosphere
+ The humor is arguably better
+ The OST has moore oomph! compared to the flatter more minimalist original
+ The cinematography is just as good as the original
+ The pacing is arguably better
- Slightly lesser cast of supporting characters
- JLC gets far less screentime
- Love it or hate it twist (sibling reveal)
- The hospital is far too empty, not very realistic

The Thing (2011) in comparison to The Thing (1982);
+ Superior screenplay with some neat revamps
+ Superior characterizations, more mature and likable
+ Better acting
+ Far better pacing
+ Further exploration into The Things true being
- About two instances of poor CGI, the effects as a whole are arguably worse
- The cinematography is good but probably a bit lesser
- Whilst the OST is just as good, some of it being recycled, it's utilization is lesser

"Halloween II" was a great way to end the series. And, it did end with "Halloween II," just so you know. 😉
