Freeze to death? Hopeful for a sequel?

I think she had the same fate that MacReady and Childs did in the 1982 movie and that is that she froze to death.

reply

Childs was an alien. Watch it again, he doesn't breath at the end. Only Mac does.

Watch the movie with the director's commentary. JC and KR left it unanswered purposely. They couldn't even decide if such a perfect imitation would know it wasn't the actual person it was imitating (i.e. you yourself wouldn't know you didn't have HIV infection without a blood test revealing it - hence, Windows' reaction to his own blood test).

NOTE:
Although not considered canon to his original film (due to not being made), Carpenter supported the ideas presented for the cancelled USA miniseries "Return Of The Thing"...which the script reveals in it's first segment that both of the characters' frozen remains are still human. His endorsement of the abandoned project is likely to be the only "real" evidence we are gonna get. Because the project was canned, you can take it or leave it and stay at 50/50 odds for both characters ;)

I am pretty sure when you start showing the symptoms, you'd know there is something wrong with you, even if you don't go for a blood test.

Just like that creature replicating people will start question his abilities to not breath or rip open to reveal 6 legs/arms.

You'd know. In both films thing people where deliberatly sneaking around to capture more hosts. Something you woulden't do if you were a perfect human being with only your regular memories intact.

I think both Childs and McReady were humans. Other wise since they were alone they would have attacked each other, the way the thing typically attacks. If they were both things there woulden't be a point in having the conversation unless the things can't detect each other which seems kinda silly if it implies the possability of freidnly fire attacks by mistake.

"Childs was an alien."

No, he was still human!

You could see at the end that Childs was still wearing his right earring and according to the 2011 prequel, the monster couldn't assimilate anything inorganic.

reply

The prequel holds no barring in the universe carpenter created. Watch the scene. Childs doesn't breathe.

reply

Ok it's the second time i read you say that when it's not true at all. Childs does breathe at the end, you see it clearly several times before he sits down and even during the conversation, so i suggest you rewatch the movie you tell us to rewatch before telling us to rewatch the movie you have never rewatched.

Rewatch the movie.

Unreliable info...it's not even presented as a quote, but something a 3rd party said. Post Office, anyone?

reply

Maybe one day someone will get lucky and get carpenter to talk.

reply

A sequel? Uh, 1982 is kind of the sequel...

LOL, Yeah that is right!
The Prequel starts off 3 days before the dog-thing arrives at the American Base.

reply

If there is indeed a russian base 50k away, that could be your premise for the thing 3... It could be kicking off there the same time as the crap goes down at the US outpost...

reply

The guy mentioned a Russian base that Kate could go to but he then turned out to be a Thing so he could have been lying.

reply

Likely froze to death. There's no way she survived out there by herself.

IF ANYONE IS PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TOWARD THE END, WHILE THE CAMERA WAS DOING A SLOW PAN, FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, THERE IS THIS EERIE CINEMATOGRAPHY EFFECT, WHEN THE SCREEN GOES TO BLACK....... YOU SEE A "FADED ESSENCE" SILHOUETTE OF HER FACE, AS IF IT WERE SUBLIMINALLY IMPLYING SOMETHING..... I JUST CAN'T PUT MY HAND ON IT..... BUT IT WAS SOOOOOOOOOOOO, ERRIE.... YOU HAVE TO SEE IT.......

reply

She must have froze to death. She had three options:

1. Try to get to the Russian camp

2. Try to get to the American camp

3. Return to the Norwegian camp.

For the first, she has no idea where it is only a vague direction. I suppose it is possible she made it, but highly, highly unlikely. If the second, when she arrives it's burned to the ground with no salvation, and possibly one or two Things there to kill her. For the third, it would be the same scenario. She shows up, only to freeze to death. Lars only survived because the heat of the fire kept him alive through the night, just like it likely did for Childs and Mac at the American camp. He was just lucky the chopper came when it did. Another few hours out there and he would have been a goner.

So, she almost surely froze to death unless she made it to the Russian camp. But I give her 10% odds on that one.

reply

assuming she froze to death
