I have asked this question before but now that some time has passed, I thought it would be a good idea to ask it again. --------------- On a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being Excellent. How would you yourself rate the 3 "THING" Movies ?
For an example, here are my own ratings below.
The Thing From Another World (1951) - 9/10
John Carpenter's THE THING (1982) - 10/10
THE THING (2011) - 10/10 --------------- What does everyone else think ?
The Thing From Another World (1951) - 6/10 Asked my wife's parents about this, and to them, when this came out, it was HORRIFYING!
John Carpenter's THE THING (1982) - 10/10 Favorite movie ever!
THE THING (2011) - 7/10 I rated this, that high, mostly because of nostalgic reasons. Just gotta say, working space ship? Sander CGI? Ugh... some cool moments however.
IMDB - Because some Trolls need more than just a bridge
Tom, yes I enjoyed it for the most part. I just wish they had used the original special visual effects for the transformations. Rob Bottin would have been proud! Some of the CGI, especially in Grigg's scene, was pretty laughable and could have been done a hell of a lot better. But overall I did like it and give credit to the producers for bringing it to the big screen, warts and all.
Who Goes There - I just got this on audio so that I could listen to it on my way to and from work
The Thing From Another World (1951) - ???/10 I haven't seen this movie in a long time, I think a decade, so I want to watch it again sometime before I can properly rate it here.
John Carpenter's THE THING (1982) - 10/10 The Thing is still my favorite horror movie of all time! The entire atmosphere of the whole movie had me on my feet the whole time. I also loved the human paranoia element and distrust of the characters.
THE THING (2011) - 8/10 I think I'm with the other poster when they said they rated it a bit higher for nostalgia reasons. While the movie was enjoyable and a decent prequel to The Thing, I still find myself scratching my head at times. At first, when I heard this movie was being made, I read that it was a reboot and I wasn't looking forward to it. That is until I read something legit that said they titled the movie "The Thing" because nothing else would fit and it was homage to The Thing. I can't remember the direct quote, so sorry about that. Having heard it was a prequel, I was excited because I wanted to know what scared the alien so much it had to run away from the Norwegians. When I watched the movie, I was a bit upset the entire crew wasn't Norwegian and that it had Americans in it (the crew within the movie plot, not the cast). I wouldn't have minded the movie in English and pretended they were speaking Norwegian. I'm not a big fan of judging special effects because I find them to be a bonus, rather than something I should rate a movie on. Although, I do think the awards should be stick around, gotta reward the talent. Anyway, I liked the movie because it kept with the same atmosphere as The Thing with paranoia among the crew and figuring out who is human and who is alien. It wasn't over the top and they stuck to the basics for most of movie. I think I might rewatch the movie this week. =P
What really surprises me even to this day about "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" is all of the funny lines (mostly from the reporter character) that are in it.
And that's why the first "Thing"-movie is my favourite. Everything's perfect. The dialogues are great. Tough hero - Tough woman! They don't give a *beep* about the Thing. They just want to burn it.
I found the 1982 remake disappointing. I never liked Kurt Russell or the movies directed by John Carpenter. Too bad, that "The Thing 2011" followed the 1982-movie.
Carpenter's film is not a remake of the earlier film The Thing from Another World as they got little in common other than snowy place and alien from space. Yet the location (one in the north pole and the other south pole), the monster (In the book the creature is a shapeshifting being that can imitate any living person or animal where in TTFAW the creature has only one form a living vegetable humanoid Frankenstein vampire creature that can reproduce itself but didn't imitate into anyone where in Carpenter's film the creature can imitate into anyone and any living creature just like the creature in the book), characters and all are very different from each other. The creature's name The Thing is the villain in the book in which both TTFA and The Thing are from. The 2 films aren't anything alike.
I consider them 2 very different films and 2 separate films, Carpenter's film is actually a new adaptation of the 1938 book Who Goes There by John W Campbell as it's a good adaptation, Hawk's film The Thing from Another World is a very loose adaptation and a separate adaptation as well.
A remake is only when it's based on a motion picture produced earlier like King Kong or The Departed.
