Too much of the movie seemed forced and the pace was just off for the whole film.

Selleck does a good job in this, but they need to ease up a bit on the tortured man theme. After a bit, you start thinking of Jesse with contempt instead of feeling sorry for him. A bit more humor would be good, perhaps even with the secondary theme in the film having a humorous center.

But the I'm drinking every night over my ex aspect is old and needs to be put aside. Additionally, the scene where his female deputy slaps the old guy on the boat was really horrible. It seem so obvious that you notice that everyone is acting and that the suspension of disbelief stops. Additionally, who the heck are they to break the law, as in slapping him, because he likes younger women and being kinky. If he didn't break any law, they have no right to tell him to leave town.

I love the films, but they need to turn down the next one a notch and get back to the more comfortable pace of the prior ones.

I agree. The movies are fair. I just wish that they followed the books a little more instead of throwing in story arcs that were never written by Parker. Such as Suitcase getting shot in Death in Paradise. That was not in the book and I don't think that it should have been in the movie.

This was one of the reasons that Parker was so unhappy with the Spenser: For Hire series. It was a good show, but a lot of what makes the books so good just weren't in the series.

It seems like they're going to keep going off in their own direction. The next movie is not even based on one of the books.

I prefer to look at the movies as their own series. If I don't compare them to the books, I enjoy them a lot more.

By the way, the next Stone novel is supposed to come out in February 2008!

I think the series has been consistantly solid. I thought Death in Paradise had the best plot, but this one wisely decreased the amount of screen time dedicated to the love interest, which bordered on dead weight in the last couple of movies.

You think the Jenn-love interest is dead weight in the movies? Sheesh, you should read the books. Almost every third chapter is Jesse with Jenn, NOT Jenn on the phone as she is in the early movies. I got to the point I would simply skip reading those chapters. And, I've read most of the books.

Gotta agree with you 'TiminPhoenix'.... about the tortured soul thing.. and the wife thing... Ease up, even just abit...
But.. having said that.... It's incredibly RARE.. for a film (in this case series).. manage to keep so high a quality level...
I would give the 1st 3 episodes.. about a 98/100.. so ...
everyone screws up every now and then....

I like 'Sea Change.' Just before seeing this one, Stone Cold' had been my undisputed favorite. But I'm veering towards 'Sea Change.' I think it was Jesse's compromised letting go of the historical case that does it for me. You can see how the normally tough Jesse is torn at this point.
