Wasn't there a puppy in the second movie? I thought I remember there being a puppy at some point. He gave the victim's dog to the girl, but by the end of the second movie had finally gotten himself a new dog. Not a small puppy, but obviously a young dog. That's the dog I though this was.
Vic Mackey: "God creates all men equal. Out of the womb, he starts playing favorites."
The dog in the "prequel" was a bloodhound named "Boomer", who Jesse says he "raised from a pup". When the dog becomes terminally ill (from kidney failure) he talks his friend the pediatrician-cum-medical examiner into administering a lethal injection. He acquires what looks like a golden retriever from the first victim of a serial killer, but fails to name it. In getting to know a young rape victim, she asks what the dog is called and when (in typical Jesse style) he replies "what do you THINK he's called", she replies "Reggie". From that point onwards, Reggie is his name. Jessie is playing mind games with the serial killer(s), knowing that they'll have to keep on killing people (or trying to) before there's enough evidence to prosecute, he plants the idea of "himself as victim" in their minds. But they're smart enough to realise that killing a cop is simply another way to commit suicide - so they decide to go after someone close to Jesse instead. Aside from his ex-wife (who the killers don't know about) and girlfriend (who they've already shot) there ISN'T anyone "close" to Jesse. So he needs to OFFER them a target, and settles on the rape victim. He uses "giving her a dog" as part of his entrapment scheme. He doesn't intend to give her the dog... he just needs material from the rape victim and her mother on his tape recorder, so that when the killers arrive, they (think that they) can HEAR their intended victim in a heated argument. Kind of like the goat bleating in a tiger trap. Jesse "giving the dog to the girl" was just play-acting for the benefit of the killers.
The first movie made was Stone Cold, but it was actually the 2nd book. Stone cold was in fact where Jesse picks up Reggie from the first murder victim. In the end of that movie, he asked the girl if she would take the dog, but obviously she didn't.
In the second movie Night Passage, it was actually the first book. Of course he couldn't have the same dog, as he hadn't moved to Paradise yet. So they gave Jesse a blood hound named Boomer. Since he was getting the Reggie dog in the Stone Cold movie, they couldn't keep Boomer around so therefore, Boomer had to go away.
Then they continued on in order of the books with Death in Paradise and Sea Change, and have used the "Reggie" dog ever since. He may have looked younger in the Stone Cold movie because he was only 2 years old when that movie was made.
I've not read the books but would like to. Anyway, at the end of Stone Cold when the killers come in to the house where the girl lives, the family is talking about taking Reggie on the tape but the dad didn't want them to have a dog. The girl wanted the dog but maybe the tape was truth as well as the distraction for the killers. Hence, the girl couldn't take the dog. Yep, Bommer was the dog in Night Passage. His kidneys were failing and Jesse had the doctor, not the vet, put Boomer down.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the first movie Stone Cold(second in time sequence); Jesse gives Reggie(Joe the Dog) to Candace Pennington to take care of. In the Death in Paradise, and Sea Change, Jesse now has the dog and no mention of Candace Pennington. Maybe the folks writing the scripts liked Joe the Dog(Reggie) and wanted that character to remain in the stories
jesse didn't like the vets attitude...i'm guessing, since i haven't seen it in a few months, because she was a little insensitive to jesses as well as boomers feelings...
~When That Rope Starts To Pull Tight, You Can Feel The Devil Bite Your Ass~
I didn't think the vet seemed insensitive, so at first I didn't know why he told the doctor he didn't like the vet. Then I remembered she asked him why Boomer had not been castrated, and he seemed offended by the idea.
I don't believe Jesse ever "gave" the dog to the girl. He asked her if she would take care of him. I believe he did this to give her something to do that would take her mind away from what she was going through. She never took Reggie from Jesse and took him home. It's never clear whether her folks would let her have the dog, or whether Jesse intended to give away his dog, I think she needed to be involved in someone's life in a positive way.
"Stone Cold", i believe, went straight to video or had a brief stint in theatres and the other three(Night Passage, Death In Paradise, and Sea Change) were made for TV...there is a 5 in post-production now called "Thin Ice" that will also be made for TV...
They actually touch on it in No Remorse about how Jesse doesn't really treat the dog like his pet more like an unwanted visitor. So the dog may not care that much. I realise that's a bit of a weird explanation. It could be that it was frightened as it will have already seen one master killed in front of it.
As soon as that scene happened I could not believe the dog did not go ballistic. My 12 year old springer still barks as soon as he hears anything or anyone approach the front door. When he walks outside at the end he should of laid into useless Reggie.
Reggie was introduce in 'Stone Cold.' But the series was made/aired out of time period sequence. Reggie is really cute. You can't mistake him when he's the dog in the series.
