The Dog is a GREAT Character, Holding His Own!
I don't think I've ever seen a movie where the dog was such a great character, holding his own with the other members of the cast! Something would definitely have been lost from this script if the dog hadn't been in it!
His close-ups, with the dog responding in worrying ways about the behavior of his owner, were intricate and un-Lassie-like (a good thing to me). And the addition of the long-shots with Selleck walking toward his home on the little island with his dog following perfectly- protectively- in line added great dimension to the depth of the movie. The Brahms music and the way Jesse got listening to a Brahms LP also surrounded the movie with depth and mood...
At first, the LP confused me and I started wondering if I were in another time period than I had thought... So I started looking for clues as to
time and noted that Jesse had an old black telephone but then realized that his ex-wife had left a message on an answering machine.
