3 things I did not get

Dear all, I was binge watching Californication, so my attention might have wandered during my DVD sessions. Can you still help me with those three points please:

*) When Lew Ashby is having a seizure at Hank's place, Chuck rams a pencil into his leg before Hanks rams the medication into his leg. Did I miss it or did not Lew react at all to being stabbed by Chuck?

*) There is a scene where Hank gets beaten up by the pimp because he has no cash on him to pay the prostitute. Don't you pay hookers before the service is performed? Even the dumbest hooker would know this and this one looks like she is top notch, which makes it even weirder.

*) Hank gets Karen a job as an architect for the house of the black director (with whom Hank has a beef). This plot thread seems to be let loose at this point. Is there any kind of pay off to this?

For your first question, in his intoxicated state, Charlie mistakenly thought that Lew Ashby meant a writing pen, and thus stabbed hin with one before Hank stabbed him with the medical pen.

As for the prostitute, Hank didn't even know she was a hooker until he had her in the room. It didn't seem like the most thought through hooker session.

I think it was to help Karen find work, especially because she always wanted to work on a house like the director's, and to build bridges with the director due to work purposes.

Lew apparently was pretty out of it when Charlie stabbed the pen in his leg. I didn't see much of a reaction to it either when it happened or afterward when he could breathe again.

The hooker segment was unusual I think. Most scenes with hookers show them demanding money up front. I seem to recall she had joked with him about being a hooker at the bar. I guess we are supposed to think that she thought he knew and he thought she was joking. I suppose she was either trying to hook him into paying her after the fact or she trusted him.
Hank did tell her he had never paid for pussy. Maybe she figured on screwing him and then demanding money afterward since he already indicated he was opposed to paying for getting laid.

I am only up to season 4 episode 12 right now, but so far I have not seen anything further regarding Hank fixing Karen up with that house redesign gig. I guess that scene was just supposed to show Hank stepping up, giving Karen a reason to let him back into her life, or to cement his position there (I don't recall right now whether they were together at the time or not). But they never really show Karen at work or talk about her work that much. I think that scene was meant as a stand-alone bit.
