'it never occurred to me that skin could determine identity'
Maybe Karen from Season 1 could be included in some way, if only to give Hank a nod for his obsession, but otherwise, particularly if you include her personality, Karen would be at or near the bottom of my list of Hank's love interests.
If you had used proper grammar, I wouldn't have had to correct you.
Eh, his continual stalker-like obsession with Karen is what made the show lose something for me. At the start, I got it. But he never evolved or moved on. And at some point, that became a little less admirable, especially with his wide array of bed partners.
I have absolutely no problem with Hank banging every chick who crosses his path - just at some point his claim of still being in love with Karen rings hollow, and it seems more like it's just some kind of broken crutch for him, or a strange need for him to have this unobtainable object of his love.
And at the times when he did get her back, he must have subconsciously known that he didn't really want or love her, and F'ed things up again, so she'd dump him.
I'm guessing that some of you found this endearing. I just found it pathetic and a little creepy.
You guys just like so don't get it dudes. Karen is his love. No question about that. To reference the episode where I am currently at, "Everybody's a *beep* Critic" (and don't delete me that is the genuine name of the episode), all the others are ice-cream cones offered in hell, who'd say no? Of which Faith is the yummiest, coollest, classiest.
Karen is not his love. Did you read my post, the one just above yours?
She's just the personification of an ideal that Hank's got in his head. When he gets with her, he F's it up - because being with her isn't what he really wants or who he is.
It's stuff that happens every day in real life. Guys get dumped by their wives or girlfriends, maybe they were banging other girls on the side, whatever. But then they turn into pussies, and beg their women to take them back. And then they repeat the cycle. You're not after saying that with all those guys, their women are their loves of their lives, are you?
Hank's not content, not thrilled with his life, feels like there's something missing, something that'd make him whole. He's filling that void with Karen, or the idea of Karen as the perfect woman, his true love.
It's actually quite pathetic when you think about it.
We are all merely speculating. In the absence of a Season 8, it will forever remain that way. Come the day of the series revival, I'm pretty sure some future screenwriters would agree with some or all of what you said.
I'm sure we could both agree that Hank has (a) an eye for the ladies (b) he is very mellow (c) he is even mellower when intoxicated (d) he generally wakes up kinda still intoxicated, and just ambles through his day loading up on further intoxication.
Now, (a) + (b) = a guy who is very likely not to stay on the road of fidelity. (a) + (b<c<d)certainly adds up to CALIFORNICATION.
I think he genuinely loves Karen, it is just that their relationship faces insurmountable odds. Your argument simply says he is hanging on to her like an obstinate dog refusing to let go of a bone. Or something like that.
Karen does seem to to me to be the kind of person who would be ideal "to fill the void in one's life" - I am not generalizing, no way would I suggest men should stick to their first loves, because, you are quite correct, they might not necessarily be their true or only loves.
But I'm speculating about only the on-screen couple that is Hank and Karen. If you take Karen out of CALIFORNICATION, what would be the point? Karen instantly earned my respect and admiration the moment she appeared on the screen. If I had been Hank, I would have been her puppy dog as well, she is a keeper. In the end, none of the others (except Faith) came close to her IN TERMS OF LIKABILITY. (But a relationship with a girl like Faith is doomed. Most of the other girls were also seriously flawed. Flawed in the sense of an absence of loyalty.
It should be noted though that this thread started off as being about hotness, and I'm talking about loyalty. What I saw in Karen was the total package, everything Hank could need.
Karen is ideal. That is all I've said, and all I'm saying. (On the hotness meter, Faith ultimately surpassed her, but...)
Here's my order.....Bingham definitely tops the *beep* list
