Fly, yay or nay?

From what I've heard, most people either absolutely hate the episode "Fly" or they absolutely love it. I'm kind of in the middle. It's not a bad episode, but its not really a good one either.

The scenes with Walt and Jesse actually trying to kill the fly are extremely entertaining and quite hilarious. Jesse talking about 'ebola' and them hitting each other with the fly swatter are great. The only problem is how slow it is. The dialogue between Walt and Jesse when Walt is falling asleep is great and superbly-written but I could see how and average TV watcher might be bored.

It surely wasn't written for "the average TV watcher." If that demographic was bored, it doesn't really matter.

FYI, here are a couple of quick thread references. The question comes up on average every 6 weeks or so.

I'm no chemistry genius but even I know that you wait until the fly starts grooming itself before you swat.

The fly has to stop, think and react but is dead before it even has a chance to think.

Also turning out the lights and turning on the light in a small room will attract the fly to there where it can more easily be killed.

I can see why some people disliked it, it being such a perfect example of a 'bottle episode' but I thought it was a very important episode because it took the time to really showcase the relationship and bond that Jesse and Walt had. I think most people who dislike it is because it stripped away all the other craziness going on typically in an episode, and that bored a lot of people. In the beginning, upon first watch, ill admit I didnt care for it and thought it was boring, but now after rewatches of the series its become one of my favorite episodes.

Its actually pretty heartbreaking when you watch it now knowing what happens to that relationship in later seasons. I love 'fly' personally.

A lot of funny lines and moments in that one too. And a moment where it looked like Walt was on the verge of telling Jesse about Jane, that was too close.

I'm actually going to put on fly now while I have my breakfast lol

1st time i watched, its Sucked. i had WTF moment after the episode. I was wondering Whats the Point of "FLY"
now i thing its OK.
but its not a great episode just a mediocore episode which builds the strong bond betwwen Jesse and Walt.
It doesn't pushes forward the strory.
overall its Nay.

reply

I think it pushes the story forward, in terms of character development. It helped make the falling out between Jesse and Walt even more dramatic in future episodes.

One of the best "bottle episodes" of a TV series that I've seen. Hardly any to action but they conversation and the deeper meaning of their conversation and the fly itself is more interesting than that.

i liked it very much when I first saw it. I don't think it is one of the episodes that I would want to watch again and again. But I thought it was a very strong episode and very touching. It makes you wonder how much went though Walter's mind whenever he was cooking meth (honestly, it must have been pretty dull).

Yay

Loved it as a character study. Walt and Jesse centric episodes were always fun

I love the episode.

My only complaint is the point in the season it appeared - because for me the momentum was kind of brought to a halt after "Kafkaesque".
