So Jesse and Hank thought it would be that easy (spoiler alert)

So Jesse and Hank thought it would be that easy to follow Walt to arrest him knowing he's connected to killers who will kill for him. Did he think that that he wasn't going to put a hit out on Jesse or what?

Walt even warned Hank, "Tread lightly..."

Jesse's actions didn't make much sense considering his paranoid ramblings in 'Rabid Dog'. "This guy has a zero tolerance policy towards threats", Jesse declares, and then proceeds to threaten Walt over the phone.

Hank had less reason to be intimidated. Walt didn't kill his own family members, that was a line he refused to cross. The danger he did pose, however, was his own criminal associations and his increasingly violent responses to situations that came up. And that is what ultimately got Hank killed, although you could argue that Walt had been putting Hank in the line of fire for a while already.

Hank knew that Walt was dangerous. He knew that the twins hit on him was precipitated by Walt's involvement with Fring and also with the Salamancas. Jesse knew even more than Hank just how dangerous Walt was. Jesse told him "Mr. White, he's the Devil." Hank just didn't believe him. He thought Walt was simply "a bastard." He saw through Walt from the moment he found the signed copy of "Leaves of Grass" in Walt's bathroom. Hank believed he had the upper hand, even though he knew Walt was smarter than he was.

I don't think Hank believed that Walt would ever best him in a physical altercation, which is what he was expecting. Hank never expected Jack's people to show up. Also, as a material witness and a civilian, Jesse would never have been allowed to accompany Hank and Gomie to To'hajiilee, even though Hank was not operating within DEA regulations by baiting Walt the way he did. That may have been the most egregious writing liberty taken by Vince Gilligan in this show.

I agree with you about taking Jesse along. To have it make sense for me, I had to figure Hank was losing control and was so consumed with getting his man, he let Jesse see the arrest. It had become a big show to Hank.

It's still pretty ridiculous, but Hank was becoming ridiculous, so that explanation satisfies me for the most part.

Jesse kept telling Hank and Gomez over and over how smart Walt was and that they'd never beat him. Jesse certainly didn't think it was going to be simple as.

Utterly pathetic that Hank thought he stood a chance against the Nazis with that little pea shooter of his. He got absolutely destroyed.

Hank never expected Jack's people to show up. Just Walt.

reply

Doesn't matter, he actually tried to fight them and got completely dominated, he didn't put a scratch on a single Nazi. He died one of the most dishonorable deaths I have ever seen, I mean that was just embarrassing. He should have put the safety on his weapon, placed it on the ground, put his hands in the air and beg to be let go, he at least would have gone out with more dignity.

In what world does begging, pleading, and surrendering = dignity??

Certainly not a world when you're up against individuals who clearly have no intention of leaving you alive. Hank and Gomez went there expecting at most that just Walt would show up and would only at most be armed with a pistol. They didn't expect Jack's gang to show up.

When Walt said "tread lightly," he was probably not referring to himself. In the sense that, he may not hurt Hank or any other family member himself, but that doesn't mean guys like Jack's gang will be like him.

All I know is, this episode was maddening!!! Shocked me to the core. Oh how I miss this show! One of the good ones!
