What If Walt Went To Mexico Instead Of Jesse?

Maybe Jesse was unavailable somehow, or maybe Jesse couldn't cook the blue on his own, but whatever the reason Gus was forced to suck it up and take Walt along with him to Mexico.

Could Gus's plan have still worked? Would Walt have done something to try and sabotage things on purpose? Or would Gus have just abandoned his plan altogether rather than have to trust Walt to follow through on such an important mission?

What do you guys think?

In the thread asking "what if Hank died in 'Grilled,'"I thought of just this alternative. I didn't write about it, but I discussed Jesse possibly not working in the super lab, so someone else would have to go to Mexico. In this case, possibly Gale...?

Anywho, considering Walt for Jesse's place is an interesting idea. Jesse was going on ride-alongs partly to see how he'd fit in the Mexico plot. He was much more pliable, Gus and Mike saw, but not Walt. Walt really couldn't be trusted with the plot; unlike Jesse, he'd be an unpredictable choice. I feel like Gus may not have wanted to chance that and have to come up with something else.

I was just thinking, if Walt was the only one to be able to cook this high-grade stuff, would then the cartel not expect him to live down there? It seems Jesse was expected to stay down there because they wanted half of the business, right? One cook for them, one for Gus. If Walt was the only cook and then only expected to teach the Mexican chemists before returning to the states, maybe Gus would have trusted Walt to go down there under the guise of teaching these guys. Of course, I think fear would still have to be involved because Walt doesn't like anyone else cooking his Blue Sky. Aaand fear is a motivator Gus does not like, and Walt is especially a wild card when fear is presented!

Yeah, I see this plan being scrapped if Walt was the one having to go to Mexico, lol. (But what would happen instead...?)

I could see them taking Walt instead, if necessary, but several possible scenarios could come from that (and none include Miller time).

From Gus' standpoint, the first goal was to take out the cartel leaders. Remember, he had no intentions of leaving Jesse down there...per Mike, either they all come home, or no one does. Secondly, he wanted to strengthen the bond with Jesse and see that he could take over as cook...so he could then knock off Walt. All went according to plan for Gus, except for getting Jesse's OK to kill Walt.

Now, a few points, if Walt would have gone instead of Jesse...

1. Gus might let the test cook by Walt go as planned, but then kill Walt with the rest of the cartel. However, this might backfire, since they actually needed Jesse to save them, as it originally went down.

2. Walt might strengthen his connection with Gus, prove his worth, and get the upper hand back over Jesse.

3. Walt could complete the cook, but then kill Gus and Mike (or let them die), as opposed to saving them, like Jesse did. Problem here is, he wouldn't likely have won a shootout like Jesse did (after all the video game practice).

4. Gus could ditch the plan to take out the cartel and leave Walt down there with them. Not likely his preferred option, since taking out the cartel was his main goal.

Expect VG could come up with a few others...
