Finally an adult love story
A movie adults can appreciate. Nothing is hurried just for effects. No forced dialogue. No bed hopping. It was such a good movie. Go see it.

Wonderful movie. I'd begun to fear there would be nothing really, exceptionally good this Summer. The Kids Are Alright was alright - this was the real stuff.
Ruba Nadda is my new favorite Canadian director. Patricia Clarkson deserves every major acting award there is.

Oh, Lordie .... I could NOT AGREE with you more.
This film depends on people's ability to "read between the lines", to fathom what a look or a gesture (however understated, mind you) really means, and who don't need icky, overly-acted sexual content or "scenes" to enjoy a movie.
I just KNEW that if Clarkson's character's husband had NOT shown up, when he did, that the relationship between she and her 'guide' would most assuredly have progressed, to (as they now quaintly say) "a different level".
The more Ken Loach films I try to see, the more I think they need subtitles!
This movie sucked. Period. There was so little to read, "between the lines," or elsewhere. The acting was stiff, and Juliette (who we're supposed to believe is some world-famous writer for Vogue) is an idiot. She shows no sophistication, bouncing from walking through the streets of Cairo practially showing her breasts, to taking a bus to Gaza, unannounced, to "find her husband." Anyone who thinks this movie was "deep" doesn't know what the definition of "deep" is.
If you want a show about Cairo (which is FAR dirtier and chaotic than how it was portrayed in this movie, by the way - I know, I lived there for two years in the 90's), watch "Travels with Rudy Maxa" instead.
DrPhoton,
Gee, sorry you didn't like the film. I liked that it was a grown-up, love story about a relationship that slooowly develops and doesn't have to be explained to people who really should be seeing stupid comedies and action films instead of watching THIS film.
On another note:
What brought you to Cairo? Just curious ...
Frankly, I envy you, having lived there. I'd like to experience the city !
And, doesn't every HUGE city feel dirty and chaotic to those persons not originally from them, or to those foreigners who aren't used to living in such places or dealing with such cultures?
The more Ken Loach films I try to see, the more I think they need subtitles!

I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Yes, there were moments that seemed to drag, but that gets to the point made about 'Cairo time.'
spoiler alert -
I felt that when they came back from the wedding and she invited him to 'tea' that was when the physical romance would bloom. But again, reading between the lines, when he moved to kiss her and she moved back, he as a gentleman and given his own principles stopped. When she moved forward he did not move to kiss her, respecting her reservations. That long moment of stillness. I feel only had she kissed him would it have continued further.
I found her going to see the pyramids - the one thing she told everyone she was waiting for her husband to do - was her 'infidelity.' It wasn't physical, it was emotional.
And her confusion at her husband's arrival was the conflict of the two worlds.
I also felt that scene in the lobby was awkward. If the two men were such friends why was it so odd and strained? Or was that their guilt at being 'caught' although technically, nothing had transpired.
And was Tareq's heart broken again? Is he alone because he falls for the women he cannot have?

Did you even see the film or are you merely content to stereotype such movies, and pre-judge them?
The more Ken Loach films I see, the more I think they need English subtitles.

lamschuchart,
Alright, at least you SAW it and are not just stereotyping, then. The movie is a quiet little film, where not much really happens, and if you a person who digs action flicks, and movies with tons of dialogue, then this film would not appeal to you. And ... surprise, surprise, it did not!
The more Ken Loach films I see, the more I think they need English subtitles.

I also follow Patty Clarkson,'s work.
Have for quite some time.
I like your more conciliatory attitude, as well.

When you are falling in love and fixing to take it to the next level and your spouse pops up it's hard to be happy to see him at that exact moment i would not read much into that

Pat was allright. I'm just eternally grateful they didn't get some 25-year-old to play opposite Sid.
shareOMG what boredom.
Unbelievable naive main character. Terrible costuming. Awful soundtrack.
No passion. Just heavy sighs and longing looks.
Don't bother.
I thought it was a beautiful movie - both in the story and in the visual. It was a beautiful love story - but very vague in my opinion. The description of the movie - says PASSIONATE LOVE STORY. I didn't see PASSIONATE. I don't have to see nudity or a lot of jumping in and out of bed. But an occasional kiss or holding hands or a loving look - would be nice.
What I did see was an adult friendship growing and at the very end saw what could have become a love story.
But in my opinion it hadn't gotten to PASSIONATE.
Why does passion need a kiss? It was only vague for those who didn't notice all the body language which screamed everything but "let's take this to the bedroom."
Why does everything have to be explicit?
The subtlety works for the film.
I agree, passionate does not equate to kissing or sex. Yet this film was far from passionate. You want to see unconsummated brimming passion? Watch Last of the Mohicans, between Uncas & Alice - that was passion in a look.

I think that was the problem of this movie. It doesn't need to be consummated love, but it was passionless. There was no spark there, especially from Patricia's character, she was so bland. & believe me, there have been plenty of quiet simmering unconsummated love stories with more passion & life than what we saw in this film.

I also really liked it, but I felt it could have been better, as it was really slow at points. I loved the two main characters, though, and I liked the way that their "romance" never became a big melodrama about infidelity. I also thought it was just beautiful to look at-- seeing this movie makes me want to visit Cairo! And I also liked some of the "culture clash" aspects of it, but I felt like they could have developed that side of it more. I also agree with whoever complained about the soundtrack-- as my friend said, it sounded like the music from an anti-depression ad on tv.
They showed the film on my college campus this weekend. Unfortunately hardly anyone showed up, and those who did (other than myself) all complained that it was "sooooo boooorrrrringgg" I guess it's not a movie for everyone, but I certainly enjoyed it! 7.5/10
Life is very short, and there's no time for fussing and fighting, my friends!~The Beatles
I thought this was one of the best movies I've seen in the last ten years. It was passionate in the way The Age of Innocence was passionate -- the characters felt tons of passion but didn't/couldn't act on it.
I thought there was very little wrong with this movie.
I can see how middle-aged people would appreciate it more than young people. Older people can appreciate the constraints, the repressed longing, the weighing of priorities, the disappointment, and the sense of losing an opportunity forever, -- and the reflectiveness -- more than a 20-year old can.
Maybe the age gap has a lot to do with the differences of opinion on this page.
The looks of anguish and grief on both their faces, when Patricia's in the elevator and after the doors close, show how much they loved each other.
Agreed. An adult film with excellent cinematography. I am going to look for some other films by this director.
shareIt was decent. I would only recommend it for lazy sunday afternoons. After about 3 mimosas. 6.5/10.
