Set in 1995?

I had been wondering for a while when this game was set, and I only recently noticed while playing one of the arcade games that there is fine print at the very bottom of the "GAME OVER" screen that says "(C) 1995 Rockstar Games Inc." or something along those lines. And now that I look back, it seems to make sense. None of the cars seem to be newer than the mid-'90s, a lot of the outfits worn by characters are not up-to-date, and the haircuts are quite dated themselves (the "Hollywood" one especially, in the context of its own name).

What do you guys make of this?

reply

I think it could have been set in the 90's too, due to the obvious lack of mobile phones and computers.

Oh yeah, and the computers. I remember seeing old '70s-like (i.e. Apple II) computers in the library that you could destroy by punching.

reply

Yup, they look like the old style Nimbus' that I had in my primary school. God they were awful, that text adventure they had on it was good though.

I always assumed that Bully took place in a time warp. So many aspects of the game represent conflicting eras. For instance, the greasers represent a now defunct sub-culture from the 50's. And the preps in this game seem to be modeled after the early 80's Reagan-era WASPs. Then you have the more subtle era references, like the very old fashioned looking asylum (a wink and a nod to One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest). And many aspects of the game seem to suggest it takes place in the present such as the townies and the jocks...

reply

well the townies are basically like the 70s burnouts and the jocks are way back from like the 50s to today so yeah

The Nerds and Jocks also to me seemed to be an homage to the Nerds and Jocks from the 80's

yeah, especially if you look at how dated those letterman's jackets are

I never thought about it that way, ha. Great post.
I used to think the game was set around in the 70s, but I'm playing it again for the first time in years (still loving it, btw), and I noticed that on one of the missions the English teacher talks about "looking at dubious sites on the internet". Kind of disappointed me, to be honest, I liked to think this was really set in the 70s, ha.
But I guess there's no denying that the game really has this kind of nostalgic, old school feeling from a lost age. It's not modern.

I thought it was just 2006, the year the game came out (right?). If it is set in the 90's that would just make it way cooler because I definitely love the 90's. Either way, though, I just always sense some 2000'ish era.

What scene? Who said it cause i don't remember that either. I always thought it was set the around the time it was made as well(2006).

oh yeah i think i remember someone saying "if a president can get away with it..." or something like that. But people have been making fun of the Clinton "scandel" since it happened it doesn't necessarily mean it took place at that time. Still there are a lot of themes in the game that are late 90s like, which isn't too far from when rockstar probably started working on the game so yeah maybe.

I'm sure you're right. 1995 seems right.

However, I just checked up the release date of the Fight Club novel and that was 1996; see Hal Esposito says a quote with reference to Fight Club - "Maybe I should start up a club like Fight Club, only instead of fighting we'll eat cheeseburgers". Pretty funny.

But I just now thought about how the arcade consoles are probably one or two years old at least, and so it's probably more like '96 or '97 (thus including the Fight Club novel in its timespan).

I find it interesting that Hal actually knows about Fight Club though, especially before the film is even out. I suppose he could have just been told about fight club by someone else and he thought it was cool, or maybe its' one of the few books he's actually read - it is very short. Plus apparently his ma is a therapist, so I imagine he's not quite as street rat-like as the other greasers, and perhaps has a little more culture and ...well motivation to read.

Very good analysis! I think I agree with you on the '96 or '97 setting.

reply

I disagree with any time setting, why does the game have to be set in any time period?

As another poster mentioned. It seems more like an amalgamation of various times just to create a unique style.
Don't understand why people feel the need to pigeon-hole the game's time setting when it clearly has no time setting.

Can it not just exist?

And so, God came forth and proclaimed widescreen is the best.

I think its set in the 2000s because of a poster in the comic book place and because there is also modern looking computer in the geeks hideout.

reply

I think it's set somewhere between 1997 and 1999. The townies have a grungy nu-metal/punk look that was popular at the end of the '90s and the internet exists but it's something that only nerds seem to use. It also seems to be set before things like comic books and Lord of the Rings-type fiction became mainstream, since the nerds are seen as inferior for having those particular hobbies, which again seems to place it, culturally, before 2001-2002.

Of course the fun of Bullworth is that the town seems incredibly dated (more like the late '50s or early '60s) but I think that's partly the makers of the game commenting on small towns being behind the times.

reply

I think it takes place in the 90s.

reply

Don't think there ever was an intended year for the setting, and it should be considered contemporary to be honest. I think when this was made, Rockstar wanted to make it modern enough so players can re-live what it was like to be in school more or less. If you follow.
