THe Original ( Book ) Ending was FAR better.....
I see that many are mad at the Movie ending where he shoots everyone because they see it as so somber and shocking. I dislike this ending as well but not for that reason. I think the movie ending was cheap and went for peoples emotions. Well, it worked but I think it was inconsistent with the rest of the story. and very weak.
As I have others mentioned on another post, the quick suicide action was odd and inconsistent with the way they did everything to fight to live. This was explained far better in the alternative ( Book ) ending. There, he mentions that he has about 90 miles worth of gas left and plans to siphon gas. This makes total sense. You wouldn't be a moron and let the car run out of gas fully knowing you are doomed if that happens. Plus that ending to me is FAR more somber than the cheap Hollywood movie ending. Because, yeah they all live, but there is basically little to no hope, with the entire world covered in the mist. So, yeah, the main characters don't die immediately, but the overall gloom and mood is FAR worse. In the movie ending, the Mist is fading and the Army is winning, therefore taking all the fear out of the creatures at that point. Essentially, the threat is over..and that does not seem to make sense since the fog was so damn thick for hours before. Now, suddenly, it's totally subsiding within minutes? The book ending engulfs you in the total fear of the movie..with the Creatures taking over..which is MUCH more creepy overall.
