Why didn't they just stay in the market?

I think that David and his group would have been better off just staying put in the market. Their whole reason and motivation to leave was to get away from Mrs. Carmody. Well, she was dead and not a threat anymore.

You might say, "well, her followers may have tried to avenge her." That is unlikely.

First up, Bud Brown (the store manager) was an unbeliever, yet when he ran back to the store, the congregation let him back in without a moment of hesitation.

Plus, you all saw the way the group ran for cover after Ollie shot her the first time. If they were truly devoted followers, they would have thrown themselves in front of her or rushed at Ollie and tried to disarm him.

One example of this is that in the seconds before shooting her the second time, Ollie walked up to her and Jim Grondin, one of her most faithful followers, was standing literally about three feet away, yet he did nothing to try to stop Ollie or help her.

Chances are that her group was only following her out of fear and returned to their sanity after she was killed. They likely would not have tried anything and if they did, all Ollie had to do was threaten or shoot one of them or maybe even take a hostage.

"Well, what about the monsters outside?"

Simple. Don't attract any attention. Stay away from the front windows and don't make any loud noises.

That's my opinion anyway. They should have just stayed there.

I disagree. I believe Carmody's followers were dangerously unpredictable--especially that one woman who was glaring at Ollie and calling him a murderer. The group already sacrificed the one army guy and were threatening to sacrifice Drayton's son. It was only a matter of time before they went after Drayton and his group again and either killed them or sacrificed them to the mist.

As for the store, they had no idea how long the mist would last. More of those lethal spiders or something even bigger and stronger could've broken through the glass and killed everybody there.

Indeed, once a few of those spiders (that were clearly breeding in the area) got into the store, that would have been the end of that. Special in aisle six; horrific deaths for everyone!

Once I knew they were nearby I'd give some serious thought to leaving too, Mrs. Carmody or not.

But if they were dangerously unpredictable, then why allow the store manager to return? His buddy killed their leader right in front of them.

Ollie only killed Mrs. Carmody after the pharmacy mission. And Carmody was still converting people to her cause while Drayton and the group were away.

Like I said before, once they sacrificed Private Jessup and threatened to kill Drayton's son, they became too unpredictable to be trusted. If the group didn't leave then, I'm certain that the others would have killed them eventually.

I disagree. I think that their "strength" was Carmody. Remember most of them were fine until they started to get brainwashed...mostly out of fear.
They only followed her because of intense fear the need for a leader. Once that leader was easily vanquished, They now had to reason to continue following her ridiculous theories. I have seen this type many times being in the military as long as I have been. I think they were totally deflated at that point.

And add to this...If you are not going to stay in the store because you think it's dangerous..and you wish to do everything you can to live...then you would THINK that you would not let your car run out of gas giving you no option other than suicide. I can see leaving the store. I think I would have done the same.
but I would have planned better once out of it...at least when it comes to obtaining gas.This is why the book ending is FAR better and more consistent.

Carmody's death may have broken the hypnotic spell she held over others....but as already stated they were about to kill David's young son.

How is David supposed to trust those people again.

I have to call bull on at least one thing you said because you're just assuming something and trying to make it fact. You don't know what her followers would have done after she was shot. You see someone killed right in front of you, in most cases you run for the hills. Saying they would do something else is total speculation.

Time and again it's been proven that the worst thing you can do when your life is in danger is to stay put because whatever your situation is it WILL deteriorate. Take away the religious nuts and they still weren't very well off because it was only a matter of time before one of the big beasties found it's way in, maybe just by stepping on the place. Take away the religious nuts and the big beasties and you still have a mix of mostly strangers trapped in an unfathomable situation in a confined space, not exactly a recipe for peaceful coexistence or mental stability. Stay? Thanks but no thanks. I'd want out, too, if only for as one character says in the book, the chance to see the sun again.

reason why they didnt stay in the market is because what if the mist was only in their town? if they could escape they could drive and be safe.
