You need to re-watch the scene again. They drove from Maine to Pennsylvania when they ran out of gas.
Drayton's(I think that was his name) leadership was constantly getting people killed.
His plan was to drive away from the Mist and leave the town. They drove through several states and the mist was still present.
Right after they drive by the giant Cthulu, they run out of gas in the middle of nowhere.
They start to hear screeching echoes of inter-dimensional monsters getting closer and surrounding the Land Cruiser. They realize that theyre *beep* Drayton, is left with 2 old geezers, 1 crying woman, and his young son. Everyone is dead weight.
In desperation, a unanimous decision was made by the group to commit suicide before being violently killed by horrible 4th dimension monsters.
Drayton, being a natural leader, decides to spare everyone a gruesome death and shoots them mercifully. As a leader, he calculated the risks and made the decision that seemed right in the current situation.
The movie focused on the horror that the characters created, instead of the corny ass CGI monsters.
The ending for this movie is perfect.
