Ending?
I read the book years ago and forgot the ending although I think it was different from the movie. Was it?
shareYes. In the book, after seeing the tall creature, they keep riving until dusk (and see a few more creatures along the way) and then stop in an abandoned motel for the night. While the rest of the group goes to sleep, David searches for supplies and finds a radio. He gets only static except that he briefly thinks he hears a voice coming from a station in the nearby city of Hartford. He estimates that they have enough gas to make it there and that, if they don't find anyone, they can syphon gas from other cars and keep going. The books ends with him going to sleep next to his son and whispering the words "Hartford" and "hope" into his ear.
