Confused about 2 things (spoiler)

Hi there, I finished Death Note and I really liked it.

There are just 2 things which confuse me. It's about the series of events after Rem dies and where there are 3 Death Notes. Two questions:

1.) We see that Light is using Misa's Death Note to keep his memories, after he relinquishes ownership of Rem's Death Note (which he picked up after Rem died), which he will send to the Task Force until he gets it back.

But that means that he LOST ownership of the first Death Note (the first, which belongs to Sidoh). When was the moment, when he relinquished ownership of this first Death Note, before or after it was given to Mello? Just because they gave the Death Note to the Mafia, does not automatically mean that the ownership is transferred, right? he could just have "lend" it...

Wouldn't it be correct, if he relinquished the ownership of the first AND the second notebook, when he gave Rem's Notebook to Ryuk?

2.) Now this is complicated. I am talking about the SUPPOSED intention of why Kira sent his notebook to the Task force to get the other notebook from the mafia. His (fake) Intentions were not explained. How was Kira supposed to kill after giving away his "only" notebook? I know it was planned by Light, but what did the task force think about it from an unknown perspective? After they gave the Death Note back to Sidoh they were still in possession of Kira's (supposedly only) notebook, which means that there could not be any more Kira killings after that. Was it supposed to look like kira is "quitting" his job?

I guess I would have to watch some episodes again but it would be nice if someone could explain some of that.

These are very good questions and I had to go back to the books to refresh my memories. When the Japanese Task Force retrieved Sidoh's Death Note, they decided that Soichiro should watch over the notebook. It was at this time that Light gave up his ownership of the Death Note and Soichiro is now the owner. Later when Soichiro hands the Death Note to the mafia member, in exchange for his daughter, ownership transferred from Soichiro to the mafia member. The mafia member soon dies and no one has ownership until the Death Note reaches the mafia. Kal Snydar is the first mafia member to touch the book and he becomes the owner until his death and Sidoh takes his Death Note away.

To answer your second question, the Japanese Task Force members did not think that Kira was giving them his only Death Note. In the book, Light states "But how many notebooks does Kira have anyway?" They just simply thought that they were given one of Kira's notebooks.

I hope that I answered your questions. I felt that the anime rushed through the second half of the story and a lot of plot holes were created at points where they weren't in the books.

What he said. The anime really did rush through the second half. It's still good, but they could've explained things better. Question for you, zachary. Do the Rewrite specials help to clear anything up not explained in the anime?

reply

I actually have not watched the Rewrites so I cannot answer that question. From what I read (in the Death Note wiki) it looks like Rewrite 1 is just a "recap" from the first half of the anime where Rewrite 2 took some liberties and change some things around the second half of the story (like cutting out the mafia). Maybe someone who watched the Rewrites can explain them better, but it doesn't sound like the Rewrites clear anything up.

Oh okay. I still wanna know what the hell that one scene was all about where Near was like I wonder who X Kira could be. Then he just looks over and Mikami is conveniently on every TV screen. Does it happen like that in the manga too?

reply

It does happen in the manga like that, but with a lot more explaining and without the glowing eyes. What Near is watching is actually recordings of programs linked to the Kira investigation. Near realizes that Takada is linked to X-Kira because with Light and Misa under heavy observation from the Japanese Task Force, X-Kira would have to communicate with Takada directly. Near started out watching all recordings that Takada appeared in and saw a program (actually 2 of them) where she was on with Mikami. In one of the programs Near noticed that Mikami had very similar ideals of that with Kira.

Near also remembered Mikami appearing on Kira's Kingdom and put in a DVD of the episode where Mikami says "if there are no more orders from Kira, then I will have to judge from myself what Kira wants." Takada was then selected as Kira's spokesperson soon afterward.

Alot of people hated how Near figured this out and claimed it impossible, but it actually makes a lot of sense if you think about it. Mikami was obsessed with Kira. So much to the point that he wanted Kira to notice him and be used for Kira's purposes. So he very frequently appeared where Kira would see him (such as Kira's Kingdom). When Light was pressured by Near and the Japanese Task Force, he had to very quickly find someone to handle the notebook and found Mikami who was trying to stand out to Kira. Choosing Mikami turned out to be the very obvious choice once you learn what his ideals and views of Kira are, which Near did watching the Takada program. After Mikami was selected by Kira, he made himself stick out by trying to communicate with Kira (his speech in Kira's Kingdom) and by selecting Takada whom he had contact with previously. Light knew Near would figure this out because it was obvious and planned accordingly.

Ah, thanks. That cleared a lot up for me. I really wish there was a possibility they could go back and remake the second half of Death Note only making it more true to the manga. Because L's arc consisted of the first 7 chapters of the manga right? I believe Near/Mello's took up 5. So it's nearly as long as L's, but in the anime, L's takes up 25 episodes, while Near/Mello's takes up 12. After doing the math, Near/Mello's SHOULD have taken up around 17.

reply

You are absolutely right about everything. Up until episode 25, the anime was very true to the manga. I was actually surprised to how similar they were. I wish they wouldn't have rushed Near/Mello's arc because I really enjoyed that part of the story and I was disappointed in how they did it. But overall I still loved the anime (the voice acting is fantastic).

Hi, I am glad that you say that. Maybe I am not a complete fool. ;)

Thank you for the clarification. But would you mind explaining how Light kept his memory for the time until he found the Death Note of Rem? I am asking this because he said he needed Misa's Death Note to keep his memory when he gave up ownership of Rem's Death Note in the anime. I just wonder how he kept his memory before that.

To answer your second question, the Japanese Task Force members did not think that Kira was giving them his only Death Note. In the book, Light states "But how many notebooks does Kira have anyway?" They just simply thought that they were given one of Kira's notebooks.

That makes sense. Although I still wonder why he did it (even if he had 20 Death notes). Just to defeat the criminals?

reply

In order to keep your memories of the death note, you just need ownership of one of them I think. Light always had ownership of at least one death note except on two occasions.

The first time he had no ownership was when he worked with L until he got Sidoh's notebook back from Higuchi of the Yotsuba Group. He kept ownership of this death note until he gave it up to his father, but by then he had ownership of Rem's notebook so he never lost his memory in that process.

The second time was when he gave Rem's notebook to the Japanese Task Force and his father took ownership. In this time Light had to have Misa's notebook on hand so he would not lose his memories. Misa still had ownership, but light had the notebook with him. After his father dies, Light takes ownership back from Rem's notebook and keeps that ownership until his death. I think I got all that right. So many different ownerships of these notebooks really makes it confusing at times.

Your second question raises a good point. I think maybe they wanted to get the notebook back so badly and get Mello that they didn't think about it too much. I understand why Kira would want to help them take the notebook from the mafia, but I don't think they would need a death note to pull it off especially since Kira already wrote most of the mafia members names on the death note prior to them taking it.
