Who else thinks Dexter and Breaking Bad was inspired by this?

Both characters from Dexter and Breaking Bad are somewhat "inside" or also part of the Police/DEA.

You guys think there's a connection?

Yeah. Also "Protagonist"s hiding in plain sight.

Its like Hunger Games vs. Battle Royale again eh? :)

I pointed this out on the Breaking Bad board, nobody seems to care. :)

Anyway, Dexter and BB are great shows still though.

The first dexter book was published just 6 months after the manga started so its doubtful that it was based off death note. It is a pretty common theme anyways.

It is quite a common theme in literature etc, has been around since literature was created. You can find bits like that in ancient mythologies, and especially if you look at ancient Greek literature (of the top of my head) Using a motive like this does not mean that Dexter was inspired by Death Note...

Cool. I love Greek Mythology too, but can't remember a character that does what Light, Walter White or Dexter do.

Can I have examples so I can look it up?
Thanks in advance.

Just finished watching BB and thinking about the show in a whole totally reminds me of Death Note. Ive seen several season of Dexter but there is less connection with that show, the strong connection is with BB and DN which I both gave 10/10 and easily 2 of my favorite tv shows of all time.

Can someone point out the connection between BB and DN? I've seen all episodes of BB but only 11 episodes of DN (still watching), maybe a connection will form later in the series but as of yet DN murders Criminals for his own visions of grandeur and also his lack of knowledge between right and wrong and a very skewed version of justice.

BB on the other hand seemed to be a story of an ordinary middle aged man going through the usually mid life crisis with the added pressure of Cancer, a Dependant family who rely on him and his income as well as money issues he faces with medical insurance and bills. Walt turned to illegal activity as a means to support himself and his family.... fair enough by the end of 1 or 2 seasons Walt is soo wrapped up in the crook lifestyle he believes there's no way out of the game until he's made enough for his family to be set forever. Walt killed dozens of people but only as a means of survival.

Lite had killed 100 people by the end of the first episode. Later on Lite begins to kill police and people of good nature to remain anonymous but that only ever happened once in BB with the former Lab partner Jessie took out.

Lite kills the majority of the time, not as a means of survival but because he has the ability to do so and therefore abuses that power.

DN seems to be based on those old gospel fables people tell from time to time. you know... The stories that end with... AND THE MORAL OF THE STORY IS....Just because your given control or power over something or someone Doesn't mean you should abuse it.

I'm going to watch the remainder of DN now. Possibly more correlation between the two will occur but having watched all of Dexter, i see a clear correlation between those two more but I don't think either inspired one an another.

Is it better to watch DN with english subtitles or english Dub? I'm watching it with english dubs but I feel like the scenes are far too rushed and that they over explain every detail you've just witnessed...

Its like your deaf and you watch someone do something and then they tell you via sign language what they just did even though you witnessed it!

Come on I was told DN was an adult animie but the way they explain everything numerous times its like the show was made for a young teen demography?

saying Breaking Bad was inspired by Death Note is a freaking long-shot.

The idea of someone being corrupted by power and also being 'on the in-side' ain't a new one created just for D.N.

I agree with you. Look at Light's story arc and compare it to Walter from BB. Although I'd say Light is more screwed up. Also, killing criminals and trying to make the world a better place? That is one of dexter's main themes. Dexter was supposedly inspired by a real person, but it's possible that Vince Gilligan saw this at some point and liked the morality scale and how it changes throughout the series

I can see the similarities between Light Yagami and Walter White. They're both good people with a strong sense of moral justice. Then Light comes in posession of the Death Note and begins to change, becoming completely devoid of human compassion. Same thing with Walter White, who starts recurring to increasing ruthless tactics and ends up antagonizing his own family. Light's family never finds out he is Kira, but he is responsible for his father's death.

Dexter, on the other hand, is a psycopath from day one. He's not trying to rid the world of evil. He just enjoys killing. Throughout the series he develops a sense of empathy for his fellow human beings and begins to change. In a sense, he's the mirror image of Light Yagami/Walter White.
