THAT Spoilerrific Death Needed to Happen

How come it feels sometimes like I'm shouting into a void when I point out how perfect L's death actually is within the context of the series?

Without going into too much detail, which is a habit of mine, can no one else see how perfect it is, thematically, for Light to be struck out by his nemesis from beyond the grave? He thought killing his greatest foe meant he won, but it didn't. Not even close, not even after more than a decade. And it's extra humiliating for him to be taken down - literally - by people he respects far, far less. L's death might have been a sad end for him to meet, but it ensures Light gets exactly what he deserves at his end, and shows (ironically) how killing people does not make problems go away.

L clearly felt affection for Light which maybe made him less cautious than he should have been.

Death Note's creator seems to say otherwise.

"No. When he told Light that Light was his first friend, it was a lie. L could never have a friend, as he found humans to be a very cunning species."

If this is true; Light definitely could never be his friend. As there is hardly any more cunning a person on Earth.

But I agree that it certainly appeared that way in the series. My particular perspective had been that L really liked that kid who had no idea he was a killer, but had nothing but contempt and rivalry for Kira. Though I also saw almost every one of L's acts of kindness to be a way of throwing Light off his guard, manipulating him, or trying to make him uncomfortable. So I don't think it was ever an easy question either way. Not at face value.

I don't begrudge anyone who thinks L liked him (I would take issue with anyone who believes Light was reciprocal), but I find it interesting that their creator says that's impossible.

I admit I hated all the episodes after L's death but you make a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing.

I think having L win and kill Kira without dying himself would've been a copout. Plain and simple. L and Kira both had to die. On the subject of L being friends with Light, I will say L probably did respect how intelligent Light was, but he definitely did not consider him a friend. He said that to mess with Light's head. L was very socially awkward. I believe he was incapable of having friends, especially with how dedicated he was to his work.

Ha good points L was the most likeable person in the show which makes it suck extra when light finally get what he wants
