Wasn't anyone ticked off.. (spoilers)

After L died, and then suddenly two "mini L's" make an appearance to basically carry on the exact same story? It's as if L's death didn't mean anything, as nothing REALLY changed in the story.. Subtly, but meh. I was hoping for a new arc, perhaps going into depth how Light was actually changing the world, or SOMETHING.

At first this show had me glued to the screen. the complexity of the story was very refreshing... But nothing REALLY changed. It was always the same. L gets ahead of light, light gets ahead of L, etc etc etc. Eventually I started browsing the internet while keeping one eye on the episode, just so I could keep up with the story... But my interest seriously dropped after L's death. After skimming this forum I think others have been affected the same way.

I still liked the show, but it just never really branched out, to me.

I agree. The first 10/15 episodes are amazing. After that, not so much. After L's death I couldn't wait to be done with the show

I can see where you're coming from but in another way I didn't mind. From the beginning I wasn't that interested. I was made to watch this so I didn't care if Light won or L did, I just wanted one of them to finish it. As time went on I began to love the show and also love the characters so it was harder for me now to see either one winning or losing.

When L died I was sad, but it was nice 'cause I got to see Light win. L also told Light that he could of probably been his successor. But then we're introduced to two others he thought could be his successor- then it became a question of who really was the one who could of followed in his footsteps (intellectually): Light or Near?

In the end Near beat Light so it was good 'cause I did get to see Light lose afterall and perhaps the scenario if L had won in the end. It was a good ending 'cause it was shown what would happen in both scenarios.

Near didn't actually beat Light. Without the intervention of Mello, Light would have won. Near and Mello together beat Light, but neither of them could have beaten him alone.

^ This. Near even admits in the last episode that thanks to Mello he caught Light.

I liked Mello and Near a lot, but I still loved L.
For all the people that say Near is a wannabe L, I have a question. Would you be saying that if Near had come first? Would he still be a "wannabe L"?

I'd say his character (on many levels) was too L-like to avoid the "L Junior" comparisons:

*Always calm, no matter what. They even have pretty much the same voice cadence.

*Same 'rumpled' look (hair/clothes/posture.)

*Both are always toying with something else while they work (sweets/toys.)

L's death upsets everyone that's into the show. I was mad. I figured..this cannot be. But it happened and you move on. You have to be a certain maturity level to accept the death of L and move on I think. Not saying you are immature!
It's just I think you have to have a certain appreciation for how life works on these emotional levels and move past it.
Death Note rides that out perfectly. In real life there's a good shot that Light would get L eventually, especially since he had the name and the face all that time. It was bound to happen. To mourn L as a viewer I think showcases the terrific job the anime did at breathing life into him.
N and Mello were NOT L's equal as separates. N even states that at the end. However N is a very enjoyable character once you get past L's death the series ends spectacularly.

It is ironic that the only thing keeping L alive for so long was Light's ego. Since Light wanted to be the god of the world for a long time, he refused to take the eyes. This was always in the background and thus reinforced the notion that L's life hung by a thread. It was implied that if Light got desperate enough he could easily do the deal with Ryuk and finish L off quickly

Similarly, I agree that the show was best up until the point of L's death but I think part of that is because they spent more episodes fleshing out that half of the Manga series out.
I read the Manga after watching the show, and up until L's death I didn't think the Manga was definitively better than Anime, but the second half of the Manga felt much more enjoyable to me than the Anime did. And I think it is simply because they did not devote as many episodes in the Anime to the material. They covered most of the material from the Manga but boiled it down too much. Maybe they had to for money reasons. But details, nuance was lost, and with that the show noticeably suffered.
Once again even if they could have made 50 episodes people still probably would have liked the first 25 more, myself included, most likely. But I do think it would have been much closer, and the show wouldn't have felt like it lost momentum, or at least not (Near)ly as much.

My biggest problem was that "two "mini L's" make an appearance" as you put it. It makes L seem less special, when there are other people who are just like him.

Well, originally, the creator considered having Near and Mello be L's kids, but the idea was shot down.
Even so, those two sure look a lot like L, aside from having aspects of his personality. But I disagree that they make L seem "less special," since I'm okay with seeing other characters have similar ambiguous disorders.

You sound like one of the fans that thinks Light is the hero.

And you are right about L's death being a major drop off for the show. I've not met anyone (or read anyone on here) saying the 2nd half is better.

So who is the hero then?

L, Near and Mello break many laws and trample rights to try to catch Light. Sure they didn't just kill people but they aren't heroes either. If there is any hero it is Light.

The hero is defined by the writers. Light is clearly portrayed as being evil. You are free to agree with his tactics, but he wasn't "the hero" of the story.

This doesn't mean L was the hero. Not all stories have a hero and you are certainly free to root for the villain if you wish. I also would have liked Light to keep going because after his defeat the story is over and it was a good story.

Killing off the most interesting character in the show did nothing for it, it was a bad move.

Light was the hero of the story and he lost.

That is the only bad thing I can say about Death Note.

What Light was doing was fixing a broken world the only way it needs fixing. The real world should do just as much, as long as their is absolute proof we should kill criminals such as murders,rapists, child molesters, child porn producers and so forth.
