Questions about The Mind has Mountains

I was watching this last night, the one about the drug trial. Couple of questions I hope someone can answer for me please!

1. Why did Bethan supply Adam (Thomas Sangster) with the extra drugs? Lewis said something like "he was a threat just as Amy was", but why was he a threat? Unlikely he was a love rival.... Was it just because Bethan thought he knew?

2. In any case, why did Adam try to run away? Grief? Because he did know and was scared?

I don't recall suspecting that Adam had sussed it at all.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

I stopped watching Lewis after a couple of series, got bored and really couldn't stand Hathaway. I've now started watching re-runs and enjoying them more. Hathaway is still an annoying, snobbish little twerp but somehow I can tolerate him better . I think I'm going to miss it after all .....

As I understood it, Adam having bought extra drugs was something that would put a stain on the doctor, and so she aided Adam in his suicide to protect the doctor's career, acting out the doctor's wish, as she saw it. That's what was stated anyway, when they found out that the couple had been selling their drugs; that it would somehow bring the doctor to ruin if word came out.

Adam probably ran away for the reasons that he himself stated. He knew that they were going to find out that he had been on Amy, and that they (the police) would suspect him of having murdered her because of it.

That's how I remember it, anyway.

I suspect (by this stage in the series) that the writers were a little more confident that, ultimately, they could develop fully the plot whereby Lewis and Hobson would eventually get together. At least they were trying to put on pressure to do so. Certainly, Kevin Whateley is on record as having said that ITV tried to engineer this scenario right from the beginning of the series but that he resisted it, thinking it would make things "too soapy."

So, if you buy into that theory, then you have to suppose that the writers were trying to show that Laura's character always wanted to be with Lewis's character. At the very least, the writers would, I suggest, have been hedging their bets in case they could achieve this. Hence we see Laura's "concern" and her "guilt" or, at least "awkwardness" at being seen with another man.

Of course, if you don't buy into this theory, then never mind!

I believe Laura's guilt came out as anger at James for telling Robbie about her date as she thought and with Robbie for what she thought was disapproval of her dating since they certainly weren't in any kind of romantic relationship. As we saw with DI Peterson, Robbie got jealous when it appeared Laura was interested in another man. Robbie seemed more grouchy and angrier than normal in this episode (probably because he didn't like the psychiatrist) and I think Laura felt it was because James had told him about her date. It seems to me that Laura had been attracted to or loved Robbie for almost the whole show and I'm sure she would rather not have Robbie know she was on a date with someone else. Robbie didn't know, and wouldn't have found out, about Peterson if a murder didn't occur and certainly at first Laura didn't tell him who she went to the lecture with and then made it clear pretty quickly that Peterson wasn't her type. I think she is a strong person but seemed to act differently around Robbie and about their relationship and where it was going. To me it seemed this was the only area in her life where she was not in control.
