Good copper shows, in my opinion.

Lewis has it, Foyle, Midsommer, Frost, Vera......some others.

Good copper shows are about the crime, the mystery.

The protagonists and/or their wives, cousins, uncles, and nuts or dogs do not get kidnapped by alien terrorists or are to any great extent involved at all in the actual deed(s).

They do not have affairs with each other, othe s in the office, or the respective wives cousins uncles aunts or dogs of the protagonists.

To the extent you know of there personal lives, it is tangential to the story, and is presented so that you know more about what makes the protagonists tick.

When copper shows do resort to wives, cousins, aunts uncles, or dogs, it's because they've run out of good ideas, I think.

I still like copper shows in general, but the ones I like best are not old fashioned whodunnits.

Oooooops. Should proofread they told me in grade school. I didn't listen apparently.

The shows I like ARE old fashioned whodunnits.

Apparently you didn't notice that IMDb provides you with an option to edit your originaly post?

You'll like Murder, She Wrote (1984).

I remember watching Murder She Wrote as a kid.....I can't get past Angela Lansbury, ot the background music they used in all prime time TV in those days...I love Colombo, but that music......

That's what I loved about the old Ellery Queen mysteries. He even invited the reader (viewer) into the story and asked them to solve the mystery. Loads of fun! They're out on DVD now.

I loved to read Ellery Queen, but I've tried to watch some of the old ones, and they just aren't up to par with the newer crime shows......production techniques and style, plus the gawdawful mysterious music the used to played throughout as part of the soundtrack for TV in those days is so distracting.

I'd love to see a modern remake of them, left in the same period, so no new gadgets, DNA, cell phones, etc.

Inspector George Gently kind of show using the Ellery Queen stories

I loved Ellery Queen!! I thought it was unique when he'd talk to the viewers and asked if they got it right!
