The Interview Room

No matter what British cop show I watch, the interview room is always the same. Dimly lit, often in the basement, grey or dark walls and that regulation metal table placed in the middle of the room with exactly four chairs. The alleged criminal and his/her lawyer (solicitor) sit on the left side and the cops occupy the right side. In reality, the unwavering design must be very traditional and/or incorporated in some British code or regulation. The only variation is that on Inspector Lewis, they had a side room with a one-way mirror enabling them to make pithy observations.

An interesting observation.

Good point! "24 Hours In Police Custody," which purports to be a real-life documentary set in a British police station, uses the exact setup you describe. Their room is much smaller and more claustrophibic than the ones I see in the fictional sets. The table is flush with one wall, there's a narrow path to squeeze around the other side of it, and two chairs are placed on either side.
