New Zealand

I guess I missed something...

Why are Lewis and Laura going to New Zealand at the end? Is it to visit someone in particular?

Lewis has at least one child, doesn't he?

Is he a grandpa now too?

Someone in Laura's family, now living in NZ, is having a baby, so Laura wants to spend a couple/few months visiting.

In the final episode, IIRC Lewis mentioned in a conversation that he had "one of each" (children). That seemed odd because his son seems to have been invisible to the point of nonexistence for years. Don't know why the writers did that (both the son's absence and bringing him up at the end). I may have missed something along the way.

Probably because in the first episode of the series, Robbie mentions to a woman that his son is off (in Australia, I think) "finding himself". And if they hadn't brought up his son in the very last episode (they've mentioned his daughter Lynn several times over the course of the show), one of the fanatics of the series (I'm thinking of myself here) would have protested ☺

Lewis mentions his son a few other times through the run of the show, I believe -- "off in Australia finding himself" is a phrase that sticks in my mind.

He definitely brings him up in Life Born of Fire when discussing the suicide of Will McEwan, Hathaway's childhood friend whom they believe suffered rejection from his father over his sexuality. "If my son was gay ... well, it just wouldn't matter," Robbie says, adamant and somewhat incredulous.

One funny point of trivia about Lewis' children: in the original series, I think Lewis' daughter is mentioned by name a few times, and her name is given as Louise. But when they brought the character of Lewis back as the focus of his own series, somebody seems to have realized the ludicrousness of naming a child "Louise Lewis" and the first name was switched to Lynn.
