An Oxford student would never,as one does in this episode, refer to an Oxford Ph.D. since that degree is known as a D.Phil. at that university.

Perhaps they were taking the (eventual) U.S. audience into account; I'm assuming that UK viewers would be familiar with the Oxonian nomenclature.
