Season 9 (the last season) general discussion

The first two (of three) episodes of season 9 have been shown on PBS as of today (Aug 14). One for Sorrow (parts 1 & 2) and Magnum Opus (parts 1 & 2)

Why is James calling Lewis "Robert" instead of "Robbie" now?

The whole subplot with James's father/family is a huge useless distraction IMHO.

The new micromanaging boss seems very out of place. And James is being an ass to him.

Love James's new suit with vest in Magnum Opus. Holy cow, that man is thin.

These crimes really don't need Robbie AND James AND Lizzie on them. Just too many people.

I have adored this series (bought the complete boxed set), but it really is time for it to fade quietly away.

What say y'all?

I don't understand the subplot with James's family either. It serves no purpose.

Well, it does show a bit of Hathaway's private life, which I don't think has ever been revealed, other than that he lived on the estate in Dead of Winter and let down an old friend in Life Born of Fire. I realize that the focus of this series is not the character's private lives, but we did get to see Robby's relationship with Laura develop, and at least get occasional references to his daughter and grandson. With Hathaway, it's felt to me like he was dropped into life unencumbered with history and loved ones. Okay--he studied for the priesthood and rowed at Cambridge, but I can think of much else. Even Robby, who I suspect is as close to him as anyone, seemed to be surprised that the mystery caller "Nell" was his sister.

And as we learned last night, his relationship with his father seems to me to explain a bit of the permanent air of sadness that is a part of him.

Just my take on it.

I agree with you. We knew the basics with Lewis, then his growing relationship with Laura. So it was time to show a little of Hathaway. Interesting, on Morse we knew very little of Lewis at that time. It could be(maybe wishful thinking) that they started now, so in the future they can build upon that
(key word being future).

I wouldn't mind the subplot of James's family drama if it weren't for the fact that it's being introduced at the end of the series. Too little, too late imo. It feels randomly stuck in considering what the show has been like up until now. Had they begun building into it in season 3 or 4, I'd probably like it more. Quite honestly, when I first saw a girl helping James move into an apartment I was hoping he'd gotten a girlfriend. All these seasons and his love life has been stagnant. I feel like wrapping up the show with him moving in with a girlfriend would have been a nice way to end the show (in regards to James' personal life).

I'm not a big fan of the new boss either. I wish Innocent had just stayed for the last season. I never thought I'd miss her as much as I did.

The Robbie/James/Lizzie trio does seem overcrowded.

I don't necessarily think the show needed to disappear, but it has changed and those changes affected its charm. I think the biggest "mistake" was to have Robert retire and then come back. The show changed the minute they turned James into a DI, and Robert was supposed to have backed off (but didn't). Then throwing a new DS in there just added one more main character when we didn't need one. I still enjoy the mysteries and think they could have kept going, but it was the change in the group dynamic that set it up for its demise (all of this is just my opinion, of course). Had they kept going prior to Robert's initial retirement I think this show could have gone on for quite some time and ultimately ended, for good, with his retirement.

I enjoyed it all ... The new characters, more insight into the older, the fascinating complicated storylines.. Great send-off!
And compared to most non PBS dramas, it was easy to relish, and I was definitely tearful when they were finally over and saying farewell.
Still remember saying good bye to John Thaw and those tears. Music still gets to me!

I completely agree about the Endeavour theme music. Really tugs at the heart. I'm glad they revived it for the Endeavour prequels.
