THE SHOES??????

I feel as if I almost get most of this movie, the self-loathing, the sexually and emotionally drive flagellation, the females being closer to nature, and nature being evil and so on.

BUT

I'm still lost on the concept of the flippin' shoes!!
She was putting them on wrong on purpose, that's a given, but for what purpose?
Was she mutilating him to get back at men?
Did she hate her child?
Was she filling the role as the evil woman?
Was there no reason?

If anyone else has any insight on this please let me know, I am at a loss.

I though her face in that scene was forced. But anyway i think i have a crush on her since i watched Melancholia.

It could be that she was insecure about people leaving her, including her own child, because she thought herself "evil". She put on wrong shoes to make it difficult for him to walk and go far. She did the same thing with her husband by the end.

It's always after I lose things that I realize how very significant the things I've lost are.

I know this thread is old but these all seem ridiculous to me.

The mother put the shoes on wrong because she was a "bad mother". Her son crawled out of a window and died because she was a "bad mother". She lost her son and couldn't track down his cries because she was a "bad mother".

Reality or not- This is what spawned her grief -her guilt- her insanity. The film /the director shows us this scene: William Dafoe showing his wife that picture of the son with the shoes on wrong - to 1) show how dafoes critical nature is slowly crushing his wife's sprit and 2) give context as to why she is losing her mind. Her depression reached a threshold.
