She was pretty well known on the social circuit at the time; she was divorced from Howard Cushing, of the elite Newport Cushing family. Although the movie shows her meeting David Frost just before the Nixon interviews, they had actually been dating for a few years at that time. She became a journalist herself, with a Los Angeles newspaper, then Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. She later married the son of Washington Post publisher Katherine Graham.
