Does anybody know what was really wrong with her? Was she crazy, sick, a stoner or just plain Lady Bertram's (Mansfield Park) brand of laziness?
I've already read The Jane Austen Book Club book (great book, by the way) but it didn't help to clear this subject.
I think she was just a stoner stuck in the 60's. Her lack of care for authority (lighting a joint on the airport's sidewalk in front of a cop), her dress, etc.

Most Jane Austen characters have mom's who are highly annoying or dead; Prudie's mom is both. Other than that, though, I didn't see her role in the story. Prudie's story could have been told just as well without her.
Nice to see Lynn Redgrave, though. She totally nailed "the annoying mom."
