I've always wondered (for anyone who's read the book)

Who the first person in the book is. I mean the group is always referred to as 'we', but the narrator (can they be called the narrator?) is none of the people actually named in the group. Is this a literary technique? I've never read another book that's written in this way.

In the book, the first person seems to be a 7th member of the book club, because the group is also referred to as 'us' and 'we', but he/she does not take part in the discussions. It's more like 'a fly on the wall' style of writing.
Although I like the movie, I can recommend the book, because it developes the characters better with a lot of background stories.

That makes a lot of sense. And I've heard of the fly-on-the-wall technique, but to be honest I've never seen it used for a book before. Thanks very much!
