breaking glass at wake for the dog
Why do they applaud in the other room when the glass is shattered at the dog's wake? Then Sylvia rushes out with paper towels...presumably to clean it up?
Most likely for the same reasons most of a restaurant applauds when a member of the waitstaff drops a tray of dishes. It's a way to relieve tension.
