The montage at the beginning

I was just wondering what other viewers thought about it. After viewing the film a few times I realized the point of the opening, or at least what I think is the point. To see most of the main characters struggling with modern technology like vending machines, ticket dispensers, metal detectors, etc., I think it's supposed to help set the mood for the characters' desire to escape to a time when these things didn't exist. Prudie's embarrassing experience with a store metal detector was particularly amusing.

Also, I think Grigg rides his bike, rather than driving his car, because film adaptations of Jane Austen's novels often show men traveling on horseback, rather than using a carriage.

I haven't read the novel, so perhaps these things were mentioned there...I don't know.

Watching the DVD and the director explains the opening montage as "... orientates us in to a sense of place, which is we live in the modern world and these are the things that are distracting and these are the things that drive us crazy and from all of this place I want to escape in to the world of Jane Austen."
I've just watched the film for the 1st time and to be honest didn't pay much attention to the montage apart from vaughly wondering why it was there - guess I missed the point.

Oh, great observation. I really like that. 🙂
