What do Brazilians think about this film?

Just interested to know. Is it realistic? What criticisms would you make?

reply

I like it.
It's real. BTW, Im a 30 years old married female, science and biology teacher.
It's not pretty as City of God but should it be? I dont think so.
It's so raw, so real, it really annoys many ppl, most of them are those kind of ppl that really is critized in the movie, and Im not talking about drug dealers and bad cops.

Many ppl think Nascimento is a hero, or at least it was depicted as a hero, I dont agree but maybe this is my only criticism to the movie, a little more effort to show he is not a hero and the good Matias is lost when he becomes a good replacement for Nascimento.

Others may say the movie is fascist, its not, it only shows a group with fascist attitude, its different.

In a very neutral way, I would say the movie main message is something like: in hell, there are no angels.

That is exactly the reality of the movie, Nascimento is NOT a hero, there are no heroes. If Nascimento was a hero, he would have been selfless, self sacrificing for the common good, an ideal father etc. etc. He's not, he's a decent person (like most people are) who finds himself in an indecent world and situation. He does what most people do, he takes it as it comes, does what he thinks is best, both for himself and his troops.

This is why so many people have a hard time, this film is not black and white, there are nothing but shades of grey, and no one theme is stuffed down the viewers throat. The police are shown in a glaring light of reality, they're not strictly good guys or bad guys, some are good, some are bad, and some are both good and bad, reality. The drug dealers are shown in the same glaring light, they're shown in all their barbarism and their humanity too.

This movie is not for those who want to be TOLD what is right, what is wrong, who is good, who is bad. It holds up a mirror to reality and lets us look into this world and make up our own minds.

Well, I'm brazilian, from Rio de Janeiro, and I really liked the movie. I agree with the user above me, this isn't the kind of movie where you can say the guy is bad or not. People made their choices and they got their results.

However, i'm feeling that Bus 174 is going to be very bad and boring. I don't think the movie should have been made. I'm feeling they're wanting to justify what the criminal( Sandro ) made. I feel sorry about the victim's family that wouldn't like to see that piece of trash and rememebr everything.

It's realistic, as far as the circumstances around it go, but it is still a movie.

So it's realistic in the sense that Saving Private Ryan or Full Metal Jacket is realistic.

i dont like this because again everthing show about favelas is bad and misery and favelas are more then trafic and drugs. they are vibrant comunities of prejudiced people who are trying to survive and exist in a country that serves and protects only ASFALTOS! Unless you live in the favela, you really do not know everthing that exists there. To visit is one thing, to live there is very diferent!

I agree it IS one-sided, but it IS also an action-movie, and not a documentary. I think the "danger" arises when people become confuse and mistake this for reality. This movie is no more realistic the TV series 24 or an American action movie. These things CAN happen - but this is fiction.

But I do understand many brazilians worry about such movies painting an unfair picture of their country. But hey... at least it will weed out the REALLY lame tourists :)

How is this fiction similar to 24?
BOPE exists and the Brazilian police kills like 1500 people in Rio every year.
