Possible goof? -- spoilers --

I don't get it. The scene from the begining of the movie, with the raid in the favela, which is later continued somewhen near the half of the movie, is supposed to take place BEFORE Neto and Matias join the training program with the BOPE. So captain Nascimento is not supposed to know them yet. However, he adresses to them, something like: "Is any of you gentlemen wounded? Any of you gentlemen got shot at? (No sir!) Good, then tonight you will learn how to carry a dead body! Move it!" How come he talks to them like he already knows them, and more than that, he gives them orders like they were already training together under his command? Only moments after that Neto is asking the BOPE guys how would he be able to get in touch with them, in order to join the elite squad. Is it just me or is this a big annacronysm ?

reply

He talks to them and gives them orders when he realizes they are cops.

reply

Bro, Neto and Matias clearly shouted they were cops so captain Nascimento knew this. The captain knowing they were cops, gave them orders to help them carry the bodies.

reply

Sure they shouted they were cops, but they were not rookies. The captain says "tonight you will learn how to carry a dead body". What's the use in telling a cop "now u will learn how to do this" unless he's a trainee or something ?

reply

There were dead bodies present. Nascimiento wasn't about to carry the bodies himself. It was solely his way of ordering them to carry the bodies. Nothing really more than that.

reply

He was a captain and while they weren't rookies they were lower level (corporals, I think). He and they knew he outranked them on the force and is free to give them orders (plus they were out of ammo and he was a pissed off guy with a rifle, I would take orders from him even if I outranked him). As to the bodies, I think the captain was just being kind of a smart-ass, like if in the army they tell you today you will learn how to dig a hole....

reply

They are screaming "PM" when they arrive (PM stands for Polícia Militar = Military Police, the ordinary police in Brazil) that's an "inferior" class of police, so any of those BOPE over there could give them orders. Don't forget BOPE went there because the PM couldn't handle it at the favela (Nascimento was looking for the "fogueteiro's" body when received a radio call that made him go there).

BOPE could give them orders simply because they just had saved their lives. Or do you think those two lonely PM's with lousy ordinary weapons would have got away by themselfs from that gunshots? No!

And also, BOPE is a super extreme elite squad, both RESPECTED and FEARED, even from ordinary police forces.

reply

That's because BOPE's guy are the best there are. So they assume comand on all other police officers.
Like when they get to the favela, they shout "Nobody will go in"....

I don't know what they shot in the dubbed version, but in the original he says "Ninguem vai subir". So I came up with this translation

reply

In the swedish translation the subs say they are "policeassistants" Matias and Neto so if the translator is right they tell BOPE they are police in training and therefore Nascimento teaches them this.

reply

I'm afraid the swedish translator wasn't right at all.
The thing is, Neto and Matias ARE regular police officers, but BOPE is higher on Rio's police hierarqhy, therefore BOPE owns the right to give them orders.

reply

actually BOPE is a different group in the same military organization. there is no hierarchy beetween PM and BOPE. they serve the same guys but they don't relate to each other.

they obeyed because they just wouldn't antagonize the feared BOPE squad that just saved their asses.

and when BOPE is entering the slum and tell the PM to not enter it isn't because they just can do that. it's that the orders have changed from high above. if BOPE is called than it means they go for the hunting and PM is discharged. PM arrests, BOPE kills.

reply

That interpreter is wrong. They Identify themselves as "PM" (Policia Militar)

reply

It's actually 'polisaspirant' in the Swedish translation (watched the film yesterday), and it is implied that Neto and Matias are in training to be officers (in the rank meaning that is) since they are immediately put in command of other police employees (Neto in the workshop and Matias in the office).
So my interpretation is that their rank is the equivalent of ensign or second lieutenant, which means that Captain Nascimento has higher rank than they have, and thus he can command them. Remember also that we already know at this point that Captain Fabio is a superior of them both.

reply

the only and i say only problem i have with the film
and i must say its a great film
is ....
they showed the bope as an elite troup specialized in built in fighting
but the whole course was only like 2 month at least thats what was showed in the movies
kind of pretentious to say even israeli special troups dont suffer that much when their training is 2 years just before they become operational
dont u think?

reply

after 2 months the guy may be ready to start on operations, but you can be sure he won't be doing the heavy *beep* until he has live experience. and they still are in some sort of probation as you can see when neto acts erratically when invade some slum

reply

Actually that's when they met.

BOPE was called to that favela because the regular police was trapped. Neto and Matias were trainees in the regular police.

BOPE comes up and meets them, they tell Captain Nascimento they are police, and the Captain is like OK and that's it. He tells them to help carry the bodies because he's a captain and Neto and Matias are militarly inferior to him. They're in the same military police, only BOPE is like a speacially trained part of the military police. So the captain's still superior to them.

By seeing how BOPE went up the favela and ended the riot in a minute, Neto and Matias were attracted to their work and asked one of them what they could do to be specially trained like them and become part of that Elite Squad (BOPE), which is just a squad inside the same military police.

I hope this explanation is not so confusing hehehe
