I'm Australian. My thoughts.
An amazing film that really sucks you in. I don't know why anyone would want to be a Police Officer in Brazil. They appear to be despised by all strata of Brazillian society (the opinions expressed by the students in the philosophy class were infuriating) The movie portrays a system that is completely dysfunctional - that even an honest cop must make small compromises, in order to do the job. I confess, a small irrational part had hoped to see those corrupt officers dealing in weapons face some BOPE retribution... but then I suppose that would represent total repudiation of rule of law - judge jury executioner.
When organisations like Amnesty International condemn BOPE, they obviously do so without understanding the context. The Police actions are a response to the environment they are dealing with. I appreciate organisations like this as visible social conscience - but they really should not be condemning the Police - it is the Government they should be pointing the finger at. Blame should be laid at the feet of the people in power for not setting a vision for change and having the committment to see it through. An uphill task as no doubt the bureaucracy would be resistant to change (nesting of eggs).
Like the previous poster - I too would like this on DVD or preferably BR. Amazon.com does not list the title.
I'm in Canada, I saw the movie this week and liked it. The English subtitles were a little mixed up, but I don't think I missed anything important.
But I have very little knowledge of Brazil. I really don't understand if this movie is grounded in reality or whether it is instead an over the top stretching of reality in order to make a point.
Is BOPE really as strapped for resources as it is depicted to be in the movie? Do they really haze the aspirants during training? How safe are the favelas, really? What is life in a favela like?
I just googled about favelas, and found this articles ... I guess they answer some of my questions:

hey folk, i'm brazilian, but i'm not from Rio de Janeiro, but i know the reality of Rio. The book/film tells a real story with fictional characters about the police of Rio de Janeiro and its elite squad: BOPE.
shareAbout the "strapped for resources" part... It is true. But the worst part:
Remember that that one is an "Elite Squad"... Meaning that it has more resources than most other police forces in Brazil...
At my city an police soldier has a monthly paycheck of about $120,00... A police captain of about $250,00 :(
Now you can imagine how easy it is to fight crime there... :P
For the guy some posts above: it was Law School Classes, not Philosophy...
I'm Portuguese and I'm dying to watch this movie. It's absurd here isn't even a release date yet for this movie in my country, considering we share the same language.
This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.
Yes, I’m Ukrainian, resident in Mozambique I have seen BOPE 3 times and a love this movie!
