Has anyone that is not brasilian seen this movie?

has any person who is not brasilian seen this movie? and what did they think about it.

reply

i doubt, mainly because it doesnt have any english subtitles.

but i know someone who's working on it.

"WTF! hey that scared me lol...ill send this to my friend..."

reply

well i hope they do watch this on theatres cuz it's a masterpiece and it shouldn't be missed

reply

I've watched it, I'm from Portugal so didn't need the subtitles. I liked it I thought it was entertaining, not as good as CIDADE DE DEUS, but than again Padilha is not Fernando Meirelles.
The only thing I didn't like in the movie was it's clear anti-drug bias. I for one believe that all drugs should be legal, but then again maybe the director was trying to capture the brazilian reality and the mindframe of the bope officers... if so... I guess he did a good job.

Elite Squad > City of God

Drugs in Brazil are a big social problem. The film makes a very accurate picture of the reality of that problem in Brazil.

City of God is just a fantasy movie of a "what should be" Favela ( even the ppl who live in the based favela said that).

Btw i am german.

I dont understand why people like City of God, it has too much sex apeal. Fernando Meireles is a pervert, he can't make a movie without porn.

Elite Squad > All the brazilian movies merged toggeter.

I agree, drug money finances way too much disgrace in our country. Prostitution, gun traffic, crime, corruption, just a few to mention...

reply

I'm in the US, saw it on DVD with English subtitles.

Great movie, I thought it was superior to City of God.

reply

Emarcio, the film wasn't against drugs. It was against the buying of drugs through the dealers, who are godawful people. It was against supporting these monsters. In fact, the biggest argument in favor of legalizing marihuana is that the druglords would lose a whole lot of money and the government would make more through taxes.

I've watched City of God, and it took my a long time to track it down with proper subtitles (ones that made sense and didn't censor out the swearing, etc). I really want to watch this film but since there are no subtitles I'll guess I have to wait for Weinstein. But, as many have said, I don't want to miss out the true film, because Weinstein will butcher it.

If anyone can actually create the subtitles..well that would be amazing. Though I know that would be time consuming.

reply

I'd create the subtitles if I knew how to put them in a subtitle form... plus, having the script would make it much easier. It is seriously time consuming work...

reply

forgot to say that this version i corrected, has all the missing dialogues/songs and new words for better comprehension.

thanks. let me know what u think.

Yeap. Very good movie although I did get to watch it with incomplete subs. I'll re-watch it when the DVD gets out and I'm sure I'll like it even more. Kept me in tension thoughout the movie. The more you think about the scenes the more you appreciate the movie.

Up there with City of God I think...

I'm Brazilian, though I lived for a long time in the States, so take my opinion for what it's worth. I loved that film, because it is one that finally treats the traffickers for what they are - scum, less-than-human monsters who have declared war on society. They are not the poor, misunderstood desperate people sociologists would have us all believe. If that were the case, there would be millions of traffickers in this country. For this reason I liked it more than "City of God".

reply

guys I improved an existing subtitle, and i believe it's really good. i live in the US since 2001. go to opensubtitles.org look for tropa de elite then my name 'FredGavioes' download, and tell me what u think of it.
thanks

reply

I still see mistakes in the subtitles' preview, but at least now they look better than before.

reply

Thanks although I wish I had them before watching the movie (-: Yeap, they seem fine. I checked the parts that the subs were missing and they are ok now. Thanks.

Speaking from the UK

Ordinary citizens like myself know that our own Police institution is far from perfect and for some members of society it is worse than for others.

I've never been to Brazil (not yet...but I have been to the US) and cannot vouch for the films accuracy but, quite often in the UK media, Brazil is depicted as this multi cultural haven were all the people are green eyed afro/japaneses/latino/european people who are all extremely beautiful that play football, volley ball, dance samba and all get on extremely well. It would be unfair not to mention the Rio Carnival also....because we always get these happy images.

It's only through watching films that some social issues are bought to our attention which then lead us on to research the subjects in depth, with a little help from google of course. I've watched Carandiru and the City of God and spent days reading up on the issues presented in these films purely because I enjoyed the films and wished to know how accurate they were.

I appreciate your comments and do not disagree with you in any way but I would like to add that I love film and I love Story and I am grateful that the author/director is bringing these issues to the worlds attention.

and....I really hope they don't/have not censored the International version (because this happens far too often)

I really really appreciated the story line and how it was presented. I liked the pace of the movie and the message that the author was trying to get accross but I don't like this movie as much as City of God or Carandiru but it is definately something i will watch again.

Today I give it 7.9 out of 10
tomorrow this may change

I watched the film, and I thought it was great but extremely overrated around here... but I must watch it again... I'm Mexican and I can speak Portuguese so I guess the language wasn't the barrier... but it's kinda weird because the people at my screening were not enthusiastic at all about this film, many walked out of the movie, but some really liked it

for now 8/10
