To get this thread started off:

In the parade episode when the balloons are released to save Buford from falling, the bunch of floating balloons gets the attention of fighter pilots who just have to come check it out. 99 Luftballoons reference.

Notice that the way the bear was drawn, it was also a reference to a certain toilet paper TV ad campaign? They did a good job of taking it back to the expression on which those commercials were based.

They make sooooo many references to Kubrick and his films. Like they make a reference to the creepy twins in the Shining. They make a reference to the way things are obsessively drawn towards objects in Kubrick films. I forget what else but there are so many random Kubrick references and I LOVE it.

reply

How about in the Hawaii episode, when Perry and Doof think they are stranded on an island. The crabs are drawn to Doof's contraption, which resembles a giant fishbone, and Doof says they're getting all "Kubricky" around it because they are worshiping it like the apes in 2001: A Space Odyssey worshiped the monolith.

Speaking of Kubrick, the episode where Candace busts them has some Clockwork Orange in it

In "The Chronicles of Meap", (Meep?), The opening narration music is a knock off of Star Trek: Voyager's opening theme. Isabella says, "I'm endangering the mission, I shouldn't have come," a reference to Return of the Jedi. Mitch declares, "I am not your father," a reference to The Empire Strikes Back. Meap takes Candace to Mitch's ship on a flying bicycle, a reference to E.T.. There were probably many more in this one but these are all I can remember.

In Split Personality when Busting-obsessed Candice hears that Jeremy-obsessed Candice left with Mom, the finger point and inhuman scream she did came right out of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. The ending with a pod-person pointing out the last remaining real person on Earth to the others.

In Chez Platypus, when Major Monogram tells Perry that he has to take his girlfriend out or he will get into trouble, we hear a cat mew and a whip crack offscreen, and MM yells at his offscreen assistant.

ejkorvette - I hope that one makes it to any dvd version, I was surprised it made it on air!!

In the second London episode, "Agent 000" has a distinct resemblence to Sean Connery. His boss looks like Judith Denche as "M" from the later movies.

In Finding Mary McGuffin, they spoof the CSI Miami theme song.

They also make reference to communism in Phineas and Ferb's Quantum Bungaloo. Notice words like "proletariat" and "bourgeois." Also, everybody is named "Joe," much like the Soviets referred to everybody as "citizen."

Also, in Picture This, Doofenshmirtz references Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" when Perry starts tapping on his window. He says "Who's that tap-tap-tapping? Is that the pesky raven again?"

(Excerpt)

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.'

reply

Not so much "pop culture" as it is a joke for the adults, in Christmas Vacation, one of the carolers at Doofenschmirtz's suggests they sing, "But it's Christmas, Becky".

I love that the doll is Mary 'MacGuffin', which, by Hitchcock's definition, is essentially any interchangeable item which is central to a story but could really be anything. That small bit made me laugh.

The Back to the Future reference when old Candace go backs and busts them, only to see the future is dark and gloomy...(Biff's alternative universe).

The "hover-cycle" that Doof drives in a couple of episodes (when he's dissin' the whale for his mac & cheese) always makes me think of Flash Gordon in the Sam Jones film from the 1980's. The handlebars are the same shape.

reply

Two from "Vanessassary Roughness":

1) After things have calmed down and Vanessa is talking to Ferb, she says, "Well, Ferb. You sure know how to show a girl a good time".

This has to be a reference to "Raiders of the Lost Ark" when Marion says the same thing to Indiana Jones after he inadvertently burned down her bar.

2) Pizzazium Infininite -- Similar to Unobtainium. Unobtainium is a real label scientists name newly discovered elements that have an atomic number of 113-118, or that they hope to discover that fulfills a specific purpose.

I've been waiting for a Time Warp episode, honestly LOL

many of the titles for the episodes themselves, are references. Even if the content of the episode isn't. Most shows actually do that.

Are we talking Time Warp as in The Rocky Horror Picture Show?

It's strange you mentioned that since Richard O'Brien does the voice of Dad in the show.

And I wonder what Malcolm McDowell (Grandpa) thought about the use of the Ludevico Treatment (the rehabilitation device in A Clockwork Orange) in "Phineas and Ferb Get Busted"?

Malcolm McDowell was the star of A Clockwork Orange, a film that was originally rated X (before X meant sex) then re-rated an R, which meant that the target audience of Phineas and Ferb could not see it in a theater or buy it on video by themselves because they are too young!!!

I don't know if this has been referenced before but there is a great reference to Back To The Future. Buford is the bully and his fish's name is Biff. Biff Tannen was the bully in Back To The Future and in Part III his ancestor was named Buford Tannen.

When Candace is on the move to bust her brothers, you hear the music from The Wizard of Oz when Mrs. Gulch is riding her bicycle to the farm to bust Toto for biting her.

I decided to put this reference due to your sig, bboops23.

I love the Wizard of Oz. I'm sure the entire wizard of oz spoof episode has been mentioned.

I think one WoO parody on a Disney show asked what would happen if you followed the red brick road. I think it was this one, which is hilarious because I always ask that.

In the Hawaii episode the Tiki idol and its theme music are straight from The Brady Bunch in Hawaii.

I got a really good one. Season 1, there was an episode called It's About Time. It's About Time was a short-lived sitcom about two astronauts transported back in time to the stone age. It happened before Back To The Future was ever thought of. I believe it only lasted one season.

I have noticed that in several Phineas and Ferb episodes when Candace is on the run to bust them that same music is played in the background.

They frequently do that. It was one of the first things I noticed, and it was done in such a subtle way, quietly playing in the background for a measure or two. Always makes me laugh, it is like her theme song or something.

The 2008 episode A Hard Day's Knight(?) which is not only a spoof on The Beatles song, but in the episode, Tim Curry was the voice of Stubbings the butler and Richard O'Brien is of course Dad.

There have been any number of old B movies about scientists discovering radioactive elements in the middle of a jungle. The natives worshipping the glowing rocks in the Pizzazium Infinionite film were a reference to this.

Also, Ferb's British flag tee shirt in The Baljeetles looked like a reference to The Who.

When Perry The Platypus borrows Norm from Doof, P&F and Candace are following him on bicycles and Phineas says; "We're gonna need a bigger bike". Referance from 'Jaws' where the expression is; "We're gonna need a bigger boat".

I loved the Edgar Allen Poe reference where Perry is knocking on Heinz's window and Doofenschmirtz mentions the "rapping and tapping" he heard.

"Thtupid thebra."

"Moon Farm" has a part during the "I blame Baljeet" song where it shows Isabella looking out at psychadelic ice cream space colors and they're reflected off of the glass of her space helmet that is a spoof of "2001: A Space Odyssey".

Yeah, I like that classic literary reference myself. I guess you could make that a pop-culture reference by calling it an Alan Parsons reference.

The season 1 episode "Are You My Mummy?" is a reference to the Doctor Who episode "The Empty Child," where a creepy little kid in a gas mask repeatedly asks "Are you my mummy? Mummy? Mummy? Where's my Mummy?" I thought it was just coincidence until in the actual episode, Phineas starts asking "Where's my mummy? Mummy? Mummy?" in the exact same tone and everything!

So well done for referencing Doctor Who!

I suppose we should add some from the movie now that it has aired?

-When Irving yells, "Wolverines" after defeating the army of invading Norm-Bots.

This is from the 1980s movie "Red Dawn" about a group of teens who fight back during a Soviet/Cuban invasion of the U.S.

-The whole scenario where only one character retains the memory of what happened that day and everyone else's memory is erased.

This is an old sci-fi trope that has been used countless times before, but it fits in with the whole P&F format to a tee. I also thought it was great it was Perry who retains his memory and not one of the human characters.

-The part when P&F use Perry's locket to initiate the emergency protocol and all of their inventions are brought "back to life" to be used as an army against the invading Norm-bots. This is like a classic Anime/Cartoon from the '90s (Voltron; Duck Tales) where the main characters unlock their secret weapon/powers just in the nick of time.

(I thought it would have been cool if the Phinedroids & Ferbots had parachuted out of the Paper Pelican instead of just emarging from their android lockers, though. This could have been a great homage to "Transformers: The Movie (1986)" where the Dino bots parachute out of a transport and fight the Decepticons who are taking over Autobot city)

Also from the movie, did anyone catch Phineas' "deluxe apartment in the sky" comment when he and Ferb first met Dr. D? Random but cute reference to The Jeffersons' theme song.

Since we're talking about the movie, the way Perry looks through the pictures and a lot of them are goofy, and the fact that no one remembers any of it, it -had- to be a reference to the ending of the Hangover.
